LORD CURRIE to the MARQUESS OF SALISBURY.

(22: Commercial.)

MY LORD,

Rome, March 28, 1900. On the receipt of your Lordship's despatch, No. 20, of the 10th instant, I at once addressed a note to the Italian Government, asking for their assistance and good will in connection with the proposed erection of a mosquito-proof hut in the Roman Campagna, with a view to testing the protection which it would afford from malaria, and I mentioned the assurance recently conveyed to Mr. Patrick Manson by His Ex- cellency Signor Bacelli that facilities would be given to any Englishman appointed for the work in question.

I have now the honour to inform your Lordship that I have received a reply, stating that the Ministry of the Interior will give instructions to the local authorities to offer Dr. Patrick Manson all possible assistance in carrying out the investigations and experiments desired, and that on his arrival in Rome he should place himself in com- munication with the Inspector-General of Health.

The Marquess of Salisbury, K.G.;

I have, &c.,

CURRIE.

Via Chinde, December 23, 1899.

I HAVE the honour to inform Your Lordship that Dr. C. W. Daniels, of the Commission sent out to study malaria in British Central Africa, has informed me that he considers he has distinctly established that a small black mosquito carries, and is probably the main agent in carrying, malaria, in the first instance at any rate, in this country.

As soon as Dr. Daniels has completed his investigations he will send his full report to his Committee.

I have, &c.,

ALFRED SHARPE,

Her Majesty's Commissioner and Consul-General.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
