EASTERN COLONIES.

(a) Mauritius-Chief Judge, Rs.15,000; Puisne Judges (3), Rs.12,000; Procureur-General, Rs. 13,500; Substitute Procureur-General, Rs.10,000; Additional Ditto, Rs.6,000; Crown Attorney, Ra.6,000; Crown Prosecutor, Rs.5,000; Registrar of the Supreme Court and Master in Bank- ruptcy, Rs.8,000, There are also a number of magisterial posts, which it is unnecessary to specify, with salaries ranging from Rs.5,000 to Rs.7,000. These and the other minor legal posts in the Colony are, as stated above, usually given to local barristers and solicitors.

(b) Seychelles.-Judge, Rs.9,000; Crown Police Magistrate, Rs.6,000.

Prosecutor and

(c) Ceylon-Chief Justice, £2,250; three Puisue Justices, £1,400; Attorney-General, £1,450; Solicitor-General, £750- £900 Registrar of the Supreme Court, Rs.6,000-Rs.7,500, There are also five Crown Counsel with salaries varying between £300 and £700, and numerous District Judges and Magistrates; but these, and all minor legal appointments are, as stated above, filled from the Cadet Service, or from the local Bar.

(d) Hong Kong. Chief Justice, £2,000; Puisne Judge, £1,300; Attorney-General, £1,500; Registrar of the Supreme Court, £720,

(c) Straits Settlements.-Chief Justice, £2,000; Senior Puisne Judge, £1,400; Puisne Judges (3), £1,200; Attorney-General, £1,500: Solicitor-General (Penang), £900; Registrar of the Cadet Officers Supreme Court (Singapore), £660 to £720.

are eligible for the post of Registrar of the Supreme Court.

(1) Federated Malay States,—Judicial Commissioner, £1,500; Assistant Judicial Commissioner, £1,000 to £1,200; Legal Adviser, £1,200. Cadet Officers are eligible for the post of Legal Adviser, and Assistant Judicial Commissioner.

MEDITERRANEAN.

(a) Gibraltar.-Chief Justice, £1,000; Attorney - General, £800, is also Legal Adviser to the War Department and Admiralty and to His Majesty's Legation at Tangier, for which he receives £51 5s.; Registrar of Supreme Court, £500; Police Magistrate, £500 to £600 (with £41 138, 4d. forage allowance).

(b) Malta.-Chief Justice, £1,000; Judges (5), £600; Crown Advocate, £600, These and other legal appointments are filled, as stated above, by members of the legal profession of the Colony.

(e) Cyprus.-Chief Justice, £1,000; Puisne Judge, £750); King's Advocate, £750; Registrar of the Supreme Court, £250: Presidents of District Courts (6) from £450 to £525, The Presidents of District Courts are judges of first instance, sitting both in civil and criminal courts with two assessors (Greek and Turkish), or alone as Magistrates. All officers have to acquire a colloquial knowledge of one of the vernacular languages (Greek or Turkish) during their first 18 months in The Island.

MISCELLANEOUS,

(0) Fiji-Chief Justice and Judicial Commissioner for the Western Pacific, £1,200; Attorney-General, £600, P.P. as barrister; Registrar of Supreme Court, £450.

(b) Falkland Islands.-There are at present no legal appoint- ments in the Falkland Islands, the Governor acting as Chief Justice, and the Colonial Secretary as Legal Adviser an Police Magistrate.

(c) St. Helena. There are at present no legal appointments in St. Helena, except a Crown Prosecutorship (£250), the Governor acting as Chief Justice. The Crown Prosecutor is also Police Magistrate and Summary Judge, receiving an additional £50 per annum for holding these offices.

GENERAL INFORMATION.

Particulars of the special regulations as to leave, passage, pensions in the case of appointments in West and East Africa including Uganda) and Nyasaland may be obtained from the Colonial Office. For convenience, a short summary is given in the Appendix.

(1.) Zeure.-Civil Officers in the Colonial Service are allowed vacation leave on full salary not exceeding three months in any Two years; but in the case of Judicial Officers the vacation leave nay extend to, but must not exceed, the ordinary vacation of the Court to which they belong, and they may, when absent on half pay leave, receive full pay during any ordinary vacation of Sach Court, which may be included in the period of their leave of absence; in the Colonies where there is no ordinary vacation of the Court, or no vacation exceeding one month at one time, Judicial Officers may have the vacation leave allowed to ordinary Civil Officers,

In addition to this vacation for the purpose of relaxation from business, Officers may from time to time be allowed half pay leave of absence (not granted before the completion of six years'
