COLONIAL POLICE APPOINTMENTS.

THE following information applies only to Colonies which are not self-governing. The police forces in the self-governing Colonies are entirely under the control of the local governments, and information with regard to them should be obtained from the Agents-General of the respective Colonies, a list of whom, with their addresses, will be found on page 9.

The West African Frontier Force and the King's African Rifles do not come under the head of Colonial Police Forces. They are military forces, the members of which may, however, be called upon to discharge civil duties, and the appointments of officers and non-com- missioned officers are made upon the recommendation of the Army Council. Applications for service with these forces must be addressed to the War Office.

Appointments in the Malay States Guides are made on the recommendation of the Commander-in-Chief in India. Preference is given to officers of the Indian Army, but officers of British Regiments serving in India are occasionally selected.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies only has control over the police forces of the Crown Colonies, the British South Africa Police, and the South African Constabulary. In the case of the former the rank and file consist of natives recruited locally. In the case of the British South Africa Police and the South African Constabulary all ranks are of European descent.

In the British South Africa Police, appointments to the commissioned grades are made by the Secretary of State, on the recommendation of the High Commissioner, who acts on the advice of the Commandant-General of the corps.

These appointments are filled up by promotion from the ranks. Enquiries relating to the terms of enlistment in this force should be addressed to
