Amendment to Prison Regulations as passed by the Administrator-in-Council on the 16th December, 1899.

"That Regulation 80 of the Regulations passed in Executive Council on the 27th May, 1892, under the provisions of the Gaol Ordinance, 1891, be amended by sub- stituting 24' for '36' in the sixth condition thereof (regulating the number of lashes to be inflicted on prisoners)."

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 261, of the 19th of December last,† on the subject of the offences for which corporal punishment can be inflicted in Cyprus, and to inform you that I approve of your introducing into the Legislative Council a Bill repealing the sections of Ordinance II. of 1878 empowering the Chief Commandant of Police to award corporal punishment in certain cases on offending Zaptiehs.
