COLONIAL OFFICE to the PRINCIPAL MEDICAL OFFICERS of CROWN COLONIES then in ENGLAND.
Downing Street, December 27, 1895.
I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to inform you that his attention has been called to the risks to which European residents are exposed in some of the tropical Crown Colonies owing to there being no trained nurses on the spot whom they could engage in cases of serious illness.
2. It has been suggested that the Colonial Governments, without imposing any charge on public funds, might supply the organisation required to provide a staff of trained nurses whose services might be obtained by residents, official and unofficial alike, at a fixed tariff.
3. Mr. Chamberlain would be glad if you would meet Dr. Gage Brown and some of the principal Colonial Medical Officers, past and present, who are now in this country, and discuss the subject, in which he takes much interest, with a view to advising him as to what might be done.
4. I am to inquire whether it would be convenient to you to attend a meeting at this Office on some day soon after the 1st of January next, at which Dr. Gage Brown will be asked to preside. The following will be invited to attend :-
P. B. Ayres, Esq., C.M.G. (Hong Kong).
S. L. Crane, Esq., M.D., C.M.G. (late Jamaica).
Andrew Davidson, Esq., M.D. (late Mauritius).
R. Grieve, Esq., M.D., C.M.G. (late B. Guiana).
W. Hoad, Esq., M.B. (Straits).
C. B. Mosse, Esq., C.B. (Jamaica).
T. J. Rowell, Esq., M.D., C.M.G. (Straits).
G. Snell, Esq., M.D. (B. Guiana).

Downing Street, December 27, 1895.
I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to transmit to you a copy of a letter which is being sent to some of the principal Colonial medical officers who are now in this country, and to express his hope that you will be good enough to preside, as proposed, over a meeting to consider what steps might be taken by the Governments of some of the tropical Crown Colonies to assist European residents, both official and unofficial, in obtaining efficient nurses in cases of serious illness.
I am, &c.
JOHN BRAMSTON.
