Candidates should note that the great majority of vacancies in these appointments occur in Southern or Northern Nigeria, East Africa, and Uganda. Vacancies in the other Colonies mentioned are rare.
Vacancies in the higher grades are almost invariably filled by promotion. The duties in most cases include judicial work, and, in the case of the Gold Coast, candidates are required to possess legal qualifications.
For appointments in West Africa the minimum age is 23, and in East Africa, Uganda, and Nyasaland 22; prefer. ence is given to unmarried candidates under 35 years of age.
For District Commissionerships in the Gold Coast the age limit is 40 instead of 35.

11. Special qualifications are required for all the other junior appointments usually open to candidates in this country, but for the appointments mentioned in paragraph 18 suitable experience of business is the only special qualification necessary.
12 (a). Vacancies for surveyors are occasionally at the engineers, disposal of the Secretary of State, mainly in connexion with minor trigonometrical, topographical, and cadastral work in the Colonies and Protectorates in tropical Africa. The appointments are temporary, for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of a renewal of the engagement for a further period of three years. The salary is 2501. or 300l. a year according to Colony. Candidates should be unmarried and over 24.. special diplomas are required, but it would be useless for anyone to apply who had not a good knowledge of land surveying.

'The Crown Agents have in their hands the selection of such officers for public works (railways, &c.) carried out through them, and they also select for clerical appointments in connexion with the works.

A list of candidates for higher educational pests is kept at the Colonial Office; but the better-paid posts, and the headships of colleges and education departments, are almost always filled by promotion from within the Colonial Services.
