HALF-YEARLY REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE IMPERIAL
BUREAU OF MYCOLOGY FOR THE PERIOD ENDING SEPTEMBER, 1923.
30TH
Finance. The Crown Agents' account on the 30th September shows a total sum of £5,889 78. 2d. standing to the credit of the Bureau. This credit balance shows a slight increase on the balance of the Reserve Fund as on the 31st March last. Many Government grants are still outstanding; provided that these are received before the expiration of the current financial year the Bureau should enter the financial year 1924-25 with a reserve amounting approximately to £6,685. The question of the continuance of the Egyptian Government's contribution is, however, now under discussion.
In Appendix I will be found details of the actual receipts and expenditure for the half-year. The receipts are low, as is usual at this period of the year, since many of the contributions are paid early in the year. under the heads "
The expenditure is low apparatus," "library" and "general," mainly on account of the Director's absence in Australia during part of the period covered, and is normal under the other heads except as regards the item "cost of copying card index of parasitic fungi" which is a special charge for which £200 was sanctioned by the Committee at the Fifth General Meeting.
The balance of this amount will be
expended during the current half-year in all probability.
The general financial position of the Bureau, as shown in Appendix II, is satis- factory. The actual expenditure for the half-year ending 30th September was £2,380 2s. 7 d., and the estimate for the remainder of the year is £2,757 5s. 6d., making a total of £5,137 88. 14d. against an estimated income of £5,175. As this year's expenditure includes three charges of a special, non-recurring nature (namely, the cost of copying the card index and the expenses incurred by the Director in travelling to Australia and proposed for Mr. Wiltshire's trip to the West Indies) amounting to £426, this small balance on the right side is not unsatisfactory.
Staff-There were no changes in the staff during the half-year under review. Publications.-The index to the first volume of the Review of Applied Mycology was issued in April. It cost £42 17s. 2d. to prepare and £77 2s. 8d. to print, or a total cost of £119 19s. 10d. punctually and the circulation continues to expand; it is now about 560 copies as The ordinary monthly issues all appeared against 468 a year ago. The value of the publication is widely recognized in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, and sufficient free copies are sent to these Dominions to reach practically all working mycologists in them.
General Work of the Bureau.-Mr. Mason has worked very hard in attempting to keep pace with the number of specimens sent in for identification, but there are several large collections in hand and arrears are beginning to accumulate. This
