MINUTES OF THE THIRTY-FIFTH MEETING OF THE MANAGING COMMITTEE OF THE TROPICAL DISEASES BUREAU, HELD ON WEDNESDAY, 2ND APRIL, 1924.

Present:

SIR HERBERT READ (Chairman).

DR. A. BALFOUR.

DR. A. E. HORN.

SIR JOHN MCFADYEAN.

MR. P. B. B. NICHOLS.

MR. W. C. HANKINSON (Secretary).

DR. A. G. BAGSHAWE, Director of the Bureau, also attended.

The Secretary apologized that, owing to an oversight, the Minutes of the Thirty-fourth Meeting of the Committee had not been circulated.

The Chairman read out a letter from Sir William Leishman, who was unable to be present, and from Mr. Ingram, the late Foreign Office representative, who has recently been ordered abroad.

1. Dr. Bagshawe reported that it was now decided that Colonel Alcock would not retire from the London School of Tropical Medicine in July, and that it would not, therefore, be possible for him to increase the time given to the Bureau from two 'days to three days.

2. The Committee then proceeded to consider the memorandumt on the Director's pension, which had been prepared at the Tropical Diseases Bureau. Dr. Bagshawe. withdrew while this was being done. Captain Sheppard, the Secretary of the Bureau, was called in to give advice on certain points, and, after some discussion, the Committee decided that before any definite decision was made it would be necessary to get expert opinion on the scheme put forward in the memo- randum. The Secretary was accordingly instructed to place this scheme before the Public Trustee, or some other expert body, and, at the same time, to ascertain from the authorities at the Colonial Office (a) whether any pension would be payable in respect of the Director's Uganda Service; (b) whether it would be necessary to consult the Treasury and obtain their concurrence. Dr. Bagshawe was then recalled and the position explained to him.

3. The Committee then proceeded to discuss the proposal to appoint a Sec- tional Editor for Yaws and Syphilis in natives of warm countries. Dr. Bagshawe made this proposal because the arrangement approved at the last meeting to secure Colonel Alcock's services for three days had now fallen through. The Committee approved the appointment of Dr. H. S. Stannus as from 1st April at a remunera- tion of £30 per annum.

4. Dr. Bagshawe then reported that Colonel Hamerton, who was appointed at the last meeting of the Committee as Sectional Editor for Rabies, had resigned
