MINUTES OF THE THIRTY-FOURTH MEETING OF THE MANAGING COMMITTEE OF THE TROPICAL DISEASES BUREAU HELD

FRIDAY, THE 8TH FEBRUARY, 1924.

1. The Minutes of the Thirty-third Meeting* of the Committee

Dr. Bagshawe reported, with reference to paragraph 5 of the Minutes, that he had secured the services of. Dr. Jenkins Oliver as Sectional Editor for Tropical Dermatology.

2. The Director then reported the result of the recent appeal for increased contributions. This had been very satisfactory and had resulted in a probable increase in the revenue from this source to about £6,500.

The question of the reduction in the contribution from the Government of India was raised, and it was pointed out that the value of the Bulletins which were sent to India was now greater than the amount of reduced contribution, and that it would be necessary to inform the Government of India that it would not be possible to continue supplying the same number of free copies since the amount of the con- tribution had been reduced.

Sir Havelock Charles recommended that a further attempt should be made to induce the Government of India to renew their contribution at the original rate of £500 a year, and he suggested that a personal letter should be sent by the Secretary of State to the Secretary of State for India drawing attention to the extremely useful work which the Bureau was performing and to the contributions made by the various Dominion and Colonial Governments, and also to the fact that, if the con- tribution were to be made at the reduced figure of £250, it would not be possible to continue supplying the same number of free Bulletins.

The Committee expressed their satisfaction at the result of the appeal, and endorsed Sir Havelock Charles' recommendation that the Secretary of State for India should be approached.

3. The Committee then proceeded to consider the account of the receipts and expenditure for the half-year April to September, 1923.† This statement was approved by the Committee.

4. The estimate of receipts and expenditure for the financial year 1924-1925‡ was then considered.

Dr. Bagshawe drew attention to the item of additional expenditure, £112 108., for the Assistant Director, and pointed out that Colonel Alcock was appointed Assistant Director in April, 1921, at £300 per annum for two days a week, but that, on Colonel Alcock's retirement from the London School of Tropical Medicine in July, 1924, it was proposed, if the Committee agreed, to utilize his services for three days instead of two, at an increased salary of £450 per annum. The Com- mittee approved this proposal.

The Committee also approved the additional expenditure of £19 15s. Od. for the first superannuation contribution in respect of the Second Assistant Secretary, who wished to come under the Federated Superannuation System for Universitica from 1st April, 1924.

The Committee approved the items of additional expenditure of £70 for pay- ment to Sectional Editors for translation of papers in languages other than English, French and German at the rate of 15s. per translation, and of £30 for a Sectional Editor for rabies. Dr. Bagshawe reported that he had in mind for this work Colonel A. E. Hamerton, C.M.G., D.S.O., and the Committee approved his appoint- ment from 22nd February, 1924.
