on the usual scale fixed by the rules. The correspondence was accordingly referred to the Treasury Solicitor, who has consented to act for the Committee direct, and Messrs. Waltons and Company have been informed that their inability to adhere to the arrangement made with the late Sir Henry Johnson must lead to a termination of their association with the Committee.

An application by Messrs. J. Hardie and Company that the remuneration of £400 per annum allowed to them for the management of this vessel should be exempted from the operation of the excess profits duty has been received and con- sidered, but, after reference to Mr. Bunbury and Admiral Slade, it was decided that the request could not be recommended.

8.0. “Terpsichore.”—The repairs recommended by Lloyd's surveyor in Melbourne were duly carried out in that port, and the vessel sailed for the United States on the 26th February. Diyatalawa."-Messrs. Waltons and Company's account in connexion with the defence of the action referred to in paragraph 9 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Meeting has been settled at £69 1s. The account as originally rendered was a claim for the sum of £107 118. 5d., but this was reduced by the Treasury Solicitor to the figure mentioned above.

9. 8.8. "Gutenfels."-The Admiralty have inquired privately as to the willing- ness of the Committee to accept liability for the painting of this vessel when in dry dock in Liverpool in July, 1915. From inquiry of Commander Segrave it appeared that the order for this painting was given by the naval authorities, and in these circumstances the Sub-Committee came to the conclusion that the charge should remain in the Admiralty accounts. Messrs. Waltons and Company advised that no claim could be sustained against the owners of the "Tervoe," which had been in collision with the "Gutenfels," for any share of this painting expenditure. Diana : Collision with s.s. Baro." "It is understood that the claim by the owners of the "Baro," which is alluded to in paragraph 14 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty-eighth Meeting, is being settled by the Committee's underwriters on the basis of eighty per cent. of proved damages.

Steamships “Tandem," Hamm," and Apolda ”—A sum of £1,652 6s. has been paid to the Federal Steam Navigation Company as a provisional settle- ment of the balance due to them under the three adjustments rendered by Messrs. loss in exchange due to the delay in the payment of the freight. It was further decided that the Transport Department need not be asked to bear any part of the expenses incurred in the removal of the ship from Marseilles to this country in ballast, unless an amendment is made to the new Naval Prize Bill having the effect of dissociating from the Imperial Exchequer any part of the proceeds of the employment of prize ships.

14. 8.8. "A polda."--A request by Messrs. Millars for the use of this vessel for a thirteenth voyage has been acceded to and the necessary agreement entered into. Permission has been accorded for the vessel to load at three ports instead of two; the terms are otherwise the same as for previous voyages.

It is understood that the vessel carried a part or whole cargo of sugar from Durban to Cape Town after discharging her timber cargo for the eleventh voyage.

15. 8.8. Edna."-The Admiralty has intimated that the Committee's share of the proceeds of sale of the nitrate cargo brought to Liverpool has been fixed at £1,744 13s. 3d. The attention of the Admiralty has been drawn to the inadequacy of this share allotted to the Committee, and correspondence is proceeding in the

matter.

17. Steamships “ Lucia,” “Emir," "Seattle," and "Pindos."-Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company have reported that they have obtained full settlement of the Committee's claims against the United Kingdom Mutual Steamship Protec- tion Association which are referred to in paragraph 2 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty-seventh Meeting, the only deductions being some small amounts for percentage allowance on account of freight.

"

18. S.8. Grahamland.”—A further reminder was despatched to the Agent- General for British Columbia on the 15th March, who has replied that he has not yet received information from his Government in the matter, but is again making inquiry.

19. Resin ex s.s. “Kalymnos.”—The Treasury decided that the price to be paid for this resin taken over by the naval authorities in Malta should be taken to be that payable by the Admiralty, not by a private purchaser, for resin in this country. Their lordships considered that the cost of transport may be disregarded on the ground that such expense would be borne by Admiralty funds if it were necessary to send resin to Malta and by prize moneys if it were necessary to bring this particular consignment to England for disposal. A price of 178. per cwt. has accordingly been agreed with the Director of Stores, Admiralty, for this resin. and "Spetzai."-In view of the 20. Resin ex steamships "Byzantion Treasury decision in the case of the "Kalymnos" resin, referred to above, the Director of Stores, Admiralty, asked that the price of 308, per cwt. already agreed for the "Byzantion" and "Spetzai" resin taken over by the Admiralty in this country should be reconsidered. The Sub-Committee have felt unable to consent to this, having regard to the fact that the resin might be expected to have fetched a much enhanced price if put up for sale in the ordinary market, and also that the Admiralty did not exercise an option afforded them of cancelling their purchase consignment when they originally demurred to the of the part of the "Spetzai agreed price of 30s. per cwt.

The part of the "Spetzai" resin which is being sold in the ordinary market has not yet been fully disposed of, but parcels of three tons and ten tons have been sold at the prices of 648. 6d. per cwt. and 63s. 9. per cwt. respectively.
