MINUTES.

2. s.s. “Nicolaos."---A claim by the Admiralty to £103 6s. 7d. for coal supplied to this ship at Gibraltar has been paid.

3. $5. Koerber." (See paragraph 17 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty-sixth Meeting.) The Board of Inland Revenue agreed to stamp the policies without charge. The amounts due from the underwriters in respect of both ship and cargo have been collected, and inquiry has been made as to whether the Marshal at Alexandria accepts the balance of £11,795 138. 6d. considered by the Accountant to be due to him from the Committee and as to the method of payment. The amount of £1,291 8s. 5d. claimed by the Transport Department in respect of repairs effected to the ship has been paid. (See paragraph 6 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Fortieth Meeting.)

'Chow Tai."—It has been ascertained that this ship was requisitioned by the Ministry of Shipping for East African service in April last.

"Kankakee."-A claim was received from the owners of the ship "Eleusis" for damage done by a collision with this vessel at Marseilles in February, 1916. Messrs. Millers were advised by their legal adviser in France that there was no defence to this claim. They therefore settled it for £64 5s. 11d., of which sum three-fourths, viz., £48 4s. 5d., will fall upon the Committee, marine risks not having- been covered. The Committee's proportion has been paid to Messrs. Millers.

6. 5.8. "Obell."-Messrs. Lachlan and Company's claim for additional remuneration. The reasons advanced by Messrs. Lachlan in support of their claim appearing insufficient, this claim was rejected.

7. s.s." Aquarius," late "Emil."-This ship was requisitioned by the Ministry of Shipping on the 3rd of July. The war risk insurance provided for by the mortgage deed was cancelled by direction of the Ministry.

8. 8.3. "Ranee."-The charter of this ship, which expired on the 16th of or until the September, has been renewed for a further period of six months conclusion of the War, whichever may be the shorter.

"Lucia,"

," late "Spreewald."--The sum of £18 has been received from the Admiralty in respect of the proceeds of sale of a piano formerly belonging to this ship.

Apolda": Eleventh Voyage. A request by Messrs. Millars that the ship should be allowed to load at three ports in Australia instead of two was allowed. Messrs. Millars' request for the use of this vessel for a twelfth voyage was accepted and the necessary agreement entered into. A proposal by Messrs. Millars to get a coolie crew from Colombo to join the ship in South Africa, on account of continued difficulties with the Australian crew, was approved.

Græcia": Voyages 1, 2, and 3.-It was decided:

(i) That the loss of £27 158. in respect of advances made to the vessel on

voyage 1 must be written off.

(ii) That the charge of £20 for cost of transferring metal shut out should

be accepted.

(iii) That, as the managers had been paid by the Admiralty for stores and bunkers on board at the date of transfer (£198 11s. 10d, stores, £22 108. bunkers), the amounts of £198 118. 10d. and £41 5s. included in the Transport Department's undertaking should be struck out. The Admiralty had agreed to take over the bunkers at Calais value, but, as it was plain that the valuation should have been made as at Cardiff, it was thought best not to insist on the rate previously accepted by the Admiralty.

Lorenzo."-Messrs. Farrar Groves and Company's accounts for the second voyage were accepted. The charter rate of 88. 6d. per ton per month for the voyage to the Persian Gulf was much below market rate, as half the cargo belonged to the Government and would pay no freight to the Company. (See paragraph 4 of the minutes of the Fifty-third Meeting.)

13. Steamships "Senegambia ” and "Frisia." The accounts have been completely agreed with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. As a result total net recoveries have been made from the Company of almost exactly £1,000 in respect of the "Frisia" and £700 in respect of the "Senegambia."

s.s. "Emir." The War Risks Office and the marine underwriters refunded premium on the item of ninety-three bales of goat skins mentioned in the fourth paragraph of the minutes of the Sub-Committee's First Meeting, and on an item of 118 bags of wax, it having been ascertained that both these consignments were insured elsewhere.

The questions outstanding with the Port of London Authority regarding dues on cargo ex this steamer have been settled and the sum of £81 109. 3d. paid to the Port of London Authority accordingly.

Hamm.”—The offer of the Ministry of Shipping to pay 5s. 9d. per month for the coal and subsequent voyages of this vessel was accepted. Bellas." This ship was fixed from Buenos Ayres.to New York with quebracho and thence to Australia with case oil.

s.v. "Terpsichore."-This vessel arrived at Rio on fire in the middle of August, and there will be a general average. She subsequently proceeded to Santos, and, at the request of the Ministry of Shipping, has been fixed to go to Australia in ballast to load wheat for the United States of America.

18. s.v." Neath.".-(a) A claim was received under the Workmen's Compensa- tion Act from the representatives of John Brennan, who was washed overboard The claim was referred to the Protection from this ship on the 25th of March, 1917.

(b) (See paragraph 11 (b) of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty- seventh Meeting.) The Ministry of Shipping not requiring this lifeboat, it was sold by the Receiver of Wreck for £1 16s. net, and that amount was remitted to the Committee.

19. S.V. Clevedon."-At the request of the Ministry of Shipping, this vessel has been fixed from South America to Australia in ballast to load wheat for the United States of America. This ship also arrived at Santos with cargo on fire. She has discharged her cargo and sailed for Australia. There will be a general average.

Talawa" (late Wotan.")-(See paragraph 11 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty-sixth Meeting.) This ship was successfully floated on the 22nd of September.

Athene").This ship was sunk by a submarine off s.v. "Cooroy" (late the Irish coast on the 29th of August. The Foreign Office have been informed.

22. C.T. 17 (“Brema").—This ship was sunk by submarine on the 19th of August. The Foreign Office have been informed.

23. Requisition of Prize Vessels for Coasting Trade.-Application has been made to the departments concerned for leave to requisition a number of prize vessels, including the s.s. "Leonora," but it has been decided not to take any action are decided. It is on these cases until the proceedings against the "Leonora hoped that the case would come on for hearing in the autumn.

24. Dyestuffs ex the s.s. "Kalymnos."-(See paragraph 7 of the minutes of the One Hundred and Forty-eighth Meeting.) These goods have been brought to Devonport, and as that port was unsuitable for weighing and sampling, arrange- ments have been made for them to be railed to London.

25. Sulphate of Potash at Malta.--These goods, which have been condemned by the local Prize Court, are to be shipped home for disposal by the Food Production Department. On the direction of the Treasury marine and war insurance has been arranged by the Committee.

26. Resin ex Byzantion."-The Ministry of Munitions offered 11s. per cwt. landed London for these goods. The Director of Stores of the Admiralty offered 30s. per cwt. landed London for the whole of the consignment, and this offer was accepted. Insurances were arranged locally.

27. Resin ex Spetzai."-This condemned cargo is to be shipped home for disposal. Part will be taken by the Director of Stores, Admiralty, on the same terms as that ex "Byzantion," and the balance sold by Messrs. Fairclough, Dodd, and Jones, the brokers recommended by the Admiralty Marshal. Insurance, marine and war, will be effected. (See paragraph 31 below.)
