(b) The Committee approved the action taken by the Secretary in arranging for the payment to the Foreign Office of the sum of £12,200 in respect of money which had been paid into the Prize Court at Alexandria for the balance of the purchase money and interest.
(e) The Secretary reported that this ship had been sunk in a collision and that the Overseas Syndicate, Limited, had paid up the balance of the purchase money, with interest, after deduction of income tax at 5s. Mr. Barstow undertook to consult the Treasury on the question whether the deduction for income tax was proper, and the Committee directed that in the meanwhile the mortgage deed should not be returned to the company nor the policies released in their favour.
Achaia' and "Parve," 13. Insurance of Cargoes.—(a) Goods Alexandria. The Committee considered further correspondence which had taken place with the Foreign Office regarding the claim of the Egyptian Bonded Ware- houses Company that these goods came under their cover, and decided that the matter might be settled by the Sub-Committee in consultation with Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company.

(b) Interpretation of Metals Clause.-The Committee considered correspondence which had taken place with Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company regarding They certain metal goods ex the steamships "Erymanthos" and "Kalymnos." decided that if the companies were willing to give the Committee the benefit of the half-rates on these goods the Admiralty Marshal should be informed, and that if the companies were not willing to do this the matter might be settled by the Sub- Committee in consultation with Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company.
(c) Settlement of Schedule No. 4The Committee approved the payment to Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company, of £526 2s. Id. in settlement of this schedule, which contains items in respect of cargo dealt with in Prize Courts in India and at Durban not yet covered by moneys received from the territories in question.
14. Employment of Mosers. Churchill and Sim-The Committee considered a letter from the Assistant Paymaster-General reporting the circumstances in which the Admiralty Marshal bad.discontinued his employment of Messrs. Churchill and Sim, and decided that a letter should be written to the Treasury giving full particulars of the arrangements which had been made by the Committee for the employment of the firm. and of the cases in which the firm had acted for the Com- mittee, and suggesting that the Committee's transactions with the firm should he treated on the same basis as those of the Marshal. It was decided that for the future the firm should not be employed; but that the Admiralty Marshal should be asked to allow the new Department which he had organized under Mr. Rackham to advise the Committee as to the best method of conducting any sales which might have to be carried out by them in the future.

Fairclough, Dodd, and Jones. decided that the Board of Trade should be asked whether the sale might not be carried out by a broker to be named by the new Sales Department of the Admiralty Marshal.
Hans Woermann : Unsaleable Cargo. 16. Steamships "Max Brock" and -The Committee considered a despatch from the Governor of Sierra Leone regard- ing certain cargo off these ships detained at Freetown, and not saleable there. They recommended that it should be suggested to the Governor that he should send the goods to their original destination or to the Cape, if opportunity offered:

"Koerber."-The Committee considered correspondence which had taken place with the Board of Inland Revenue regarding the stamping of the policies effected on the cargo of this vessel at Alexandria, and they decided that the Board of Inland Revenue should be informed that the charge for stamps would fall as an ultimate charge on the vote of credit but for the fact that the earnings of the ships under the Committee's management exceeded the expenses incurred: and that the Treasury had ordered that the Committee's, account should be an account under 12 (b) of the Treasury minute regarding the Vote of Credit.
18. Dook and Harbour Dues on Government Vessels and Stores.-The Com- mittee considered letters which had been received from the Accountant-General of

the Navy reporting the arrangements which had been made for the payment of dues on Government vessels and stores, and decided that no action need be taken in respect of the ships and cargoes under their management pending the receipt of claims from the dock and harbour authorities concerned.
19. 8.5. "Edna": Dock Dues.-The Committee considered correspondence with the Admiralty regarding a claim of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board in respect of this vessel, and decided that the claim should be paid.
20. 8.8.
"Marina."-The Committee considered a claim which had been received from Messrs. Mitchell, Cotts, and Company for £638 Os. 10d., for disburse- ments and expenses incurred by them in sending out the officers for this vessel to Lagos. Mr. Holt reported that Messrs. Mitchell, Cotts had now, offered to accept £500 in full settlement. The Committee decided that the case should be referred to Messrs. Waltons and Company for their opinion.

s.s. "Senegambia": Accounts.--The Committee decided that the Penin- sular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company's offer to deduct the sum of £125 in respect of the charge for victualling should be accepted.
22. Steamships "Hamm,"
Apolda,” and 'Birkenfels": Settlement of Cargo Insurances.-The Committee considered a letter of the 4th of May which the Secretary had written to Mr. Glanvill suggesting the lines upon which the claims of the underwriters in respect of the fire and marine insurances on the cargoes of these vessels might be settled. They approved the lines of settlement suggested.
23. s.s. "Obell" (late “Concadoro").—The Committee considered a claim for additional remuneration which had been received from Messrs. Lachlan and Com- pany, and directed the Secretary to inquire from the firm the ground on which they considered themselves entitled to this remuneration.
24. Alexandria Prize Court Moneys.-The Committee considered a letter whith had been addressed by the Treasury to the Assistant Paymaster-Genera! instructing him to continue to hold this money in suspense as a deposit, and explaining that until further instructions it would not be necessary for him to obtain detailed accounts in respect of this or any similar deposits that might be placed with him.

2. Steamships “Lúcia,” “Emir”“
a letter which Mr. Holt had received from The Committee considered Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company reporting that the United Kingdom Mutual Steamship Protection Association had demurred to pay the full amount of the cargo claims in respect of the steamers managed by Messrs. Elder Dempster for the Committee (£915 17s. 4d.), and had offered the sum of £600 in full settle- ment. The Committee decided that Messrs. Elder Dempster and Company should be instructed to press the club to admit full liability.
