"Koerber."-Mr. Holt reported that the underwriters had raised difficulties regarding the settlement of the Crown's claim under the policies of insurance, owing to these not having been stamped when received in London. It was decided to write to the Inland Revenue claiming that these policies, being effected for the benefit of the Crown, need not be stamped,

"Terpsichore."-A letter from the Ministry of Shipping was con- sidered, and it was decided that she should be fixed with fuel to South America, the question of her subsequent employment being reserved for the present.

7. 3.v. "Clevedon."--It was decided that if the charter for fuel to Trinidad could be cancelled this ship should be sent with a cargo of fuel to South America, the question of her subsequent employment being reserved for the present.

8. s.s." Frisia."-Mr. Tennyson reported that he had written to the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company approving the revised accounts which they had submitted, and informing them that the balance shown to be due to them of £1,778 13s. 2d. would be held to their account pending a settlement of the accounts of the 8.8. Senegambia." It was decided that a further letter should be written asking the Company to report as soon as they had any further information regarding the repairs effected at Hong Kong, the expenses of which were not yet approved.

9. s.s. “Senegambia."-The Sub-Committee considered the correspondence which had passed with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, and showed that all points were now satisfactorily settled with the exception of the cost of victualling the crew and the cost of repairs carried out at Hong Kong and Singapore. With regard to the latter point, despatches from Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements were expected. Mr. Holt undertook to consult Captain Segrave with regard to the cost of victualling.

10. Schooners 'Leonor" and Oregon." The Sub-Committee considered reports which had been received from the Governor-General of Canada, and decided that it was not worth while to proceed further with the attempts to find employment for these ships.

11. 5.5. "Diana."-(a) The Sub-Committee considered correspondence which had passed with the Assistant Paymaster-General and Messrs. Mitchell, Cotts, and Company, and decided that the balance of £93 6s. 8d. due to the Sun Shipping Company in respect of hire overpaid for the last month of the charter of this vessel should be refunded to them.

(b) The Sub-Committee considered a letter from Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company stating that the rate of insurance for this ship would have to be increased by ten per cent. It was decided that the consent of the Colonial Office should be obtained to the payment of the increased rate on behalf of the Government of Nigeria.

(a) Mr. Tennyson reported that the Admiralty had refunded the sum of £6,750 advanced by the Committee in respect of the coal and wheat voyages, and that the ship was to be employed in carrying a cargo of stores from this country to the Eastern Mediterranean, whence she would proceed to No definite reply had been Karachi to load wheat for the United Kingdom.

(b) Mr. Tennyson reported that the Criminal Investigation Department had inquired into the charges against the master and officers of this ship referred, to in the tenth paragraph of the First Meeting of the Sub-Committee, and had recom- mended against a prosecution. The Federal Steam Navigation Company had further paid off the chief steward and first and second officers, and had completed their investigation of the master's accounts, which showed a balance due to him of £5 11s. 7d. after deduction of all payments properly made by him. It was

understood that the Ministry of Shipping agreed that this balance should be paid to the master in full settlement of his accounts, a receipt being taken from him to this effect, and that he should be allowed to resign.

13. 5.3. Apolda "Mr. Tennyson reported that a new arrangement had been made in order to save the duplication of the insurance of the freight on this steamer. The Federal Steam Navigation Company were now to insure the freight against marine risk, and Messrs Millars were to advance the amounts necessary for the disbursements of the steamer, receiving £3 38. 4d. per cent. for interest instead of three-and-a-half per cent. for interest and commission as hitherto. The Committee approved this arrangement on the understanding that the £3 39. 4d. per cent. was the customary payment in the trade.

(0) The Sub-Committee considered a request from Messrs. Millars for permis- sion to carry forty loads of timber for the Western Australian Government on the next voyage of the ship from Western Australia, this timber not being for the Union Government. The Sub-Committee agreed that, if the consent of the Union Govern- ment was obtained and the current rate of freight paid, there could be no objection to this.

14. 8.S Obell" (late "Concadoro ").--Mr. Tennyson reported that Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company had collected the sum of £10,300 due under the policy held by the Committee as security for the unpaid purchase money, and had remitted £10,248 108. (the full amount collected, less half per cent. commission) to the Committee. This amount, after deduction of the balance of the purchase- money remaining due to the Committee and interest up to date of the clearing of Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven, and Company's cheque, had been paid to the Obell Steamship Company, Limited. The Sub-Committee approved of the action taken in this respect.

Bellas." Mr. Tennyson reported that the Admiralty had sent in a claim for £60 for the towage of this vessel from Liverpool to Rathlin Island. Mr. Holt undertook to ascertain whether the managers considered this a reasonable charge.

Launches and Lighters at Jamaica.-The Sub-Committee considered a despatch from the Governor of Jamaica stating that all these vessels were being employed by the Government. Having regard to the terms of the revised Naval Prize Bill, it was not thought necessary to make any recommendation regarding the safeguarding of the interests of the Prize Fund.

17. Steamships Hamborn and Hocking."-The Sub-Committee con- sidered a correspondence with the Admiralty Coasting Trade Office and Messrs. Pickford and Black regarding the discrepancies in the inventories for these vessels, and decided that it was not worth while to take any further action in the

matter.

18. 5.8. 'Bethania."-The Sub-Committee recommended that a claim for 12s. by the Government of Jamaica in connexion. with the upkeep of this ship should be paid out of their funda, a similar payment having been made out of their funds on a previous occasion (see minutes of the One Hundred and Seventh Meeting, paragraph 16).

Insurance of metal goods at Malta ex the Steamships “Erymanthos" and "Kalymnos"-The Sub-Committee considered a correspondence which had taken place with. Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven,, and. Company and the Admiralty Marshal regarding the proper interpretation of the metals.clause in the insurance cover for prize cargoes, and decided that the underwriters should be pressed to allow half-rates on all the goods not packed in cases or casks.

20. 8.5. Erymanthos:"Railway. Material-The Sub-Committee considered! a letter from the Assistant Paymaster General regarding the adjustment of the expenses of the sale in regard to the parts of the three ten-wheel locomotives sold on behalf of the War Office: They decided that the total charged against the proceeds of sales in respect of both expenses of erection' and brokerage should be divided in proportion between (a) the sum of £2,018 48, being the gross proceeds of sale for various material; (b) the £1.800 received for the parts of the three ten- wheel locomotives sold on behalf of the War Office; and (c) the £3,000 due for the
