3. The spontaneous liberality exhibited by the principal tribes of the Protec- torate, and their willingness to take a share in supporting the cause of the Govern- ment during the present crisis, is a source of keen satisfaction to myself, and will, I feel sure, be equally appreciated by Ilis Majesty's Government.

SIR,
District Commissioner's Office, Kitui, 14th May, 1915.
I HAVE the honour to forward herewith draft for Rs. 10,643.60 for His Excel- lency's War Fund. This sum is made up of cash and the proceeds of sale of 270 head of cattle and 390 sheep and goats, after deducting expenses, presented by the Akamba of Mumoni Location, Kitui District, to the above fund.
Mr. H. W. Gray, Assistant District Commissioner, was on safari in March last and mooted the idea of the subscription which was so well taken up; he in
says, his official report of the safari :—
"The idea met with prompt and generous support from each sub-location visited, and I was agreeably surprised when I returned to Mumoni to find, even among the small and scattered villages in the neighbourhood, which are poor in cattle, that they had actually met, discussed the matter, and decided what contribution they would make, without my having said anything to them on the subject-their gifts were brought into Mumoni.
I mention this as showing how entirely voluntarily these people have sub- scribed, and, indeed, would subscribe again if necessity arose.
I know nothing of the finances of His Excellency's War Fund, but I am sure that there can be no question that money subscribed will find endless deserving pur- poses to which to be applied, as, apart from Europeans, there must be numerous deserving cases of native sufferers from the war who would be relieved from moneys subscribed by the natives of the country, but apart from the urgency of the need of funds I certainly feel myself the richer for having learnt of a trait in the character of the Akamba previously unsuspected by me, namely, their responsiveness to an appeal touching their purses on behalf of the Government and country."
In informing His Excellency of this presentation, will you be so kind as to draw his attention to Mr. Gray's suggestion that the money be used to relieve distress among natives who have suffered through the war?
C
This money has been subscribed by 800 persons, and as the Akamba have no real chief" perhaps His Excellency will personally acknowledge receipt to me, and I will be able to tell the people concerned that the letter is in the Kitui Office.
The Private Secretary
to His Excellency the Governor.
