[Answered by No. 94.]
Government House, Mombasa, British East Africa,
10th February, 1915.
I HAVE the honour to inform you that Mr. Frank Watkins, senior, an old and prominent settler in the Naivasha Province, has collected from his friends and neighbours in the districts of Solai and Molo a parcel of about 46 tons of maize to be utilized for the benefit of the Belgian refugees in England.
2. Mr. Watkins and his friends desire that the maize may be used for the benefit of the refugees in such manner as may be deemed desirable by those who have made themselves responsible for their care, either by distributing it in the form of food to the poorer classes or by selling it and expending the proceeds for their benefit.
3. The consignment has been carried to Kilindini free of railway charges, and the Manager of the British East Africa Corporation has kindly arranged that it shall be shipped to London by a Union-Castle steamer free of freight. If it is possible to obtain a remission of charges in England in respect of its delivery, such a concession would be gratefully appreciated here.
4. The parcel is being consigned to the British East Africa Corporation in London. It is not possible to say at present by what steamer it will be despatched, but the Corporation is being requested to communicate with you on the subject and to seek your instructions as to its distribution or disposal.
5. A suitable expression of my appreciation has been communicated to Mr. Watkins and to his fellow-contributors.
