Under these circumstances it does indeed seem hard and unaccountable why such steps should have been taken, and we hope that some explanation will be afforded to Mr. Holzapfel through us for the same, and that instructions may be given that reasonable facilities may be afforded to any British nominee nominated by Mr. Holzapfel, and who may be approved of by the Governor of the Protectorate, to control or protect the interests of the Company,
As presumably you will require to communicate with the Governor of the Protectorate before you are able to make any reply to us, may we suggest that you ask the Governor to give you an early reply, especially having regard to the delay which has taken place in forwarding the report promised in your communication of the 6th October, 1914.*

I HAVE received from the War Office a request for information respecting the East African Trading Company, Mombasa and Zanzibar, who appear to be the local agents of the Clan-Ellerman-Harrison Lines.
The War Office have heard from a private source that of the two partners, one, Mr. Marcus, is now on active service in the Austrian Army, and the other, Mr. Lowe, is interned.
I beg that I may be supplied with any information respecting the firm which is in the possession of the Colonial Office.

I AM directed by the Board of Trade to transmit to you herewith copy of a letter from Messrs. Criddle & Criddle, relative to Messrs. Schauer, Welter & Company, Limited, and to state, for Mr. Secretary Bonar Law's information, that, in accordance with the powers conferred on them by the Trading with the Enemy Act, 1914, the Board appointed an Inspector in connexion with the affairs of the Company in question, who have an address at the offices of Messrs. Holzapfels, Limited. Milburn House, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and appear to carry on business at Kijabe Hill. British East Africa.
From the Inspector's report it appears that the shareholders of the Company are Carl Dautzenberg, of Schedewitz, Saxony (1,500 shares), Heinrich Dautzenberg (1,500 shares), Konrad Schauer (4;400 shares), and Max Welter (8,500 shares), all
