No. 89.

MEETING OF THE PUBLICATION SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE IMPERIAL BUREAU OF ENTOMOLOGY, HELD AT THE COLONIAL Office on Wednesday, 4TH JUNE, 1919.

1.

Present:

PROFESSOR E. B. POULTON (in the chair).

DR. A. G. Bagshawe.

PROFESSOR G. F. NUTTALL.

DR. G. A. K. MARSHALL (Director).

DR. S. A. NEAVE (Assistant Director).

MR. A. C. C. PARKINSON (Secretary).

A DISCUSSION took place on the proposal brought forward by Professor Nuttall at the meeting of the General Committee on the 22nd May,* to the effect that the abstracts for the Review of Applied Entomology should not in future be prepared under the present system, namely, by a permanent staff of abstractors working continuously in the offices of the Bureau, but that their preparation should be entrusted to a number of independent specialists, who would sign their respective contributions.

2. It was also put forward by Professor Nuttall, for consideration, that authors should be asked to append to their papers their own abstracts, which would be available for reproduction in the Review of Applied Entomology.

3.

Various difficulties connected with these suggestions were pointed out by the Director and Dr. Neave; and after full discussion, in which the procedure of the Tropical Diseases Bureau was compared with that adopted by the Bureau of Entomology, it was agreed that, bearing in mind the object of the Review of Arplie- Entomology, the present system of abstracting and indexing should be continued, and that no action should be taken on the lines suggested.

4. A further suggestion that in the Review the group to which an insect belongs should be indicated whenever an insect is mentioned was considered. The difficulties inherent in the whole question of entomological nomenclature were mentioned, and it was explained that in more recent numbers of the Review the principle of indicating, if not directly, at least in the text of the abstract, the group or order of the insect referred to had been followed, and that every name was carefully checked before publication.

The Sub-Committee agreed as to the desirability of indicating the group or order, but considered that the indication now given in the abstracts published in the Review was sufficient for all practical purposes.

5. It was agreed that when new volumes are started the price of the Review

of Applied Entomology and the Bulletin of Entomological Research should be raised in consequence of the increase in the cost of paper, printing, etc.
