We have at last begun to receive the long-promised abstracts of Japanese papers from Dr. Miyake, three of which have already been printed. Dr. Trägardh has also recently sent in all the arrears of Scandinavian literature.

Finance. The annual balance sheet will be found in Appendix I., in which, with the exception of the items, Carnegie Fund, Crown Agents, and Petty Cash, the sums given indicate the total receipts and expenditure since September, 1909.

Appendix II. shows the actual receipts and disbursements during the past financial year. The expenditure was £127 in excess of the estimate made at the beginning of the year; this was due to an increase of £233 for salaries, as a result of the increments sanctioned by the Committee and the engagement of extra assistants for the Plant Pests Catalogue; while, on the other hand, the expenditure on all the minor items came to a little over £100 less than was allowed for.

Appendix III, gives an estimate of the cash resources that we have in reserve, from which it will be seen that the surplus available for general purposes amounts to no less than £2,641. This is about £750 more than we had at the end of the previous year, the increase being principally attributable to the fact that we have not replaced two assistants who have left us-Dr. Lamborn and Mr. Ealand-whose joint salaries amounted to £680 a year. The Committee will be asked to consider the desirability of utilizing a portion of this surplus in carrying out investigations in connexion with certain insects that are doing serious injury to food crops in this country.

It may be noted that the final £1,000 promised to us by the Carnegie Trustees has not yet been handed over.

In Appendix IV. will be found an estimate of the expenditure for the forth- coming year, showing a probable surplus of £414.

Collections of Insects.-There has been a considerable falling off in the number of collections received, only 113 having come in, as compared with 165 for the previous year.

These came from 48 different correspondents (as against 62), distri- buted as follows:-Africa, 17; Europe, 16; Tropical America, 8; Asia, 5; North America, 1; Australia, 1. The collections contained over 11,000 specimens (as against 38,000), of which 2,000 (21,000) were bloodsuckers. During the year 70 (103) lists of identifications were issued, comprising 1,297 (2,375) specific names :— Africa, 737; Europe, 322: Tropical America, 157; Australia, 65; Asia, 16.

Collections of named insects of economic importance were presented to the following institutions :-London School of Tropical Medicine, 167 specimens; Cam- bridge University, 112; Glasgow University, 30; and the Sanitary Section,
