No. 1.

18TH

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF

THE TROPICAL DISEASES RESEARCH FUND, HELD ON FEBRUARY, 1916.

PRESENT:

SIR J. WEST RIDGEWAY (Chairman).

SIR PATRICK MANSON.

SIR THOMAS BARLOW.

SIR DAVID BRUCE.

SIR HAVELOCK Charles.

MR. BLECH.

MR. FIDDIAN (Acting Secretary).

THE business for which the meeting had been called was to discuss, with representatives of the University of London, the question of temporary measures for carrying on the University Department of Protozoology.

The following extract from the minutes of the Committee of the London School of Tropical Medicine, was communicated to the Committee :-

'After due consideration it was resolved that the Committee of the London School of Tropical Medicine are prepared to co-operate with the University of London in appointing a Protozoologist to be attached to the School and to be a Professor in the University, and in providing for the holder of the office a salary, to be contributed jointly by the University and the School, in proportions to be mutually arranged."

Some preliminary discussion took place before the University representatives were introduced. Sir Patrick Manson explained the views of the Committee of the London School of Tropical Medicine on the subject of the suggested joint appointment of a Professor of Protozoology. Sir R. Havelock Charles said the India Office attached great importance to the researches and teaching of the professor being connected with the study of tropical disease. Sir Thomas Barlow said that it was felt to be a disadvantage that hitherto the professor had not had direct and regular access to a hospital affording facilities for obtaining material from cases of tropical disease. Sir David Bruce said that the Lister Institute had given laboratory facilities and other accommodation to the late professor and his Department, on condition of their being identified with the Institute, and they did not want to lose the connexion.
