QUARTERLY REPORT UPON THE GENERAL SANITARY CONDITION OF PETER'S HALL DISTRICT FOR THE QUARTER ENDING 30TH JUNE, 1914.

THE area here dealt with comprises Meadow Bank, Agricola, Eccles, Bagots- town and Peter's Hall, viz., that area in which the International Health Commis- sion has been carrying on the work of eradicating ankylostomiasis.

2. The main drainage of these villages is, in general, in good condition and sufficient to prevent any flooding.

3. The inter-lot drainage had been much neglected. Special attention has been paid to this fault and great improvement is noticeable. Almost every lot has now dug out and cleaned the necessary drain.

4. It was found necessary to serve 203 notices and take 13 prosecutions to enforce this measure.

5. The water supply is that common in all villages of this Colony. The water is a peaty surface water derived from the Lamaha conservancy and kept in large open shallow trenches. This is a very unsatisfactory type of supply, but is the best obtainable at present. An artesian well would be of great benefit to these villages. 6. A small amount of rainwater is collected in barrels, but this only lasts for a short period after each rainfall.

7. The method of sewage disposal is of great importance considering the campaign at present in progress against the hookworm. In every case the pit privy has been adopted and attempts have been made to cause every lot-owner to erect one of these structures.

8. This table indicates the extent of the work.

81

9. When any ground is suspected to be heavily infected from defæcation in the past, it is sprayed with copper sulphate or with iron sulphate in order to kill off the infective embryo hookworm.

10. Special early surprise visits are made from time to time, but no offender has yet been caught depositing excreta elsewhere than in a privy.

At the beginning of 11. Mosquito prophylaxis has also received attention. the quarter practically no vats or barrels were screened and each vessel bred in- numerable pests. Much dense overhanging bush, low vegetation and long grass grew everywhere. It is now rare to find an unscreened water receptacle, and the No economic major portion of the unnecessary vegetation has been cleared away. trees or bushes have been removed.

12. In accomplishing this work 398 notices were served and 30 prosecutionз

taken.

13. General sanitary measures have also been dealt with to a large extent. These mainly consisted of animals ill-kept, accumulation of rubbish, lack of ventilation, ill-constructed and dirty bakehouses and provision shops, old buildings unfit for habitation, etc.

While a great number of these offences have been abated, this matter still requires, and is receiving, continued attention.

14. Ninety-four notices have been served and fourteen prosecutions taken.

SIR,

Enclosure 2 in No. 26.

K. S. WISE,

Surgeon-General.

International Health Commission, 725, Southern Buildings,

Washington, D.C., 3rd August, 1914.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 9th July, enclosing copy of report of work for the eradication of hookworm disease in Peter's Hall District, British Guiana, for the quarter ending 30th June, 1914.

2. I note with interest what you have to say concerning the character of the I have heard his work done by Dr. Howard. Dr. Howard has just arrived. account of the work with much interest. On behalf of the International Health Commission I wish to express to you, and to the Government of British Guiana, our grateful appreciation of the hearty co-operation which has been given in this work from the beginning, We are gratified with the result. From our point of view this demonstration has shown three things:-

(1) Hookworm disease can be eradicated in a given community.

(2) This work can be done within limits of time and expenditure that make

the undertaking altogether feasible.

(3) It is possible to back this work by sanitary improvements, even under

trying conditions, which will prevent the spread of the disease.

3. Nothing has been more encouraging than the work which the Government has done toward the improvement of sanitation in this district, where the work of examining and treating people has been done. I see nothing to interfere with the successful development of this work in the future in British Guiana.

Surgeon-General,

British Guiana.
