No. 47.

UGANDA

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE GOVERNOR.

(Miscellaneous.)

[Answered by No. 49.]

SIR,

Downing Street, 5th February, 1915. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Wallis's despatch No. 424, of the 6th of October, 1914,* and to convey to you the thanks of the Visual Instruction Committee for the photographs which you have been good enough to supply for their use.

2. The photographs have been inspected by the writer of the lectures, who believes that they will enable him to give an interesting account of the Protectorate. 3. It is possible that the issue of the lectures may be delayed for some little time, and the Committee would be glad if any officer coming on leave, who may have photographs in his possession, might be asked to communicate with them on

his arrival.

4. The reproduction of slides from book illustrations is not generally satis- factory, and I have to ask if it would be possible to obtain photographic prints of the views on pages 11 to 19 of the Report referred to in the last paragraph of Mr. Wallis's despatch.

I have, &c.,

L. HARCOURT.

2. I am, however, forwarding by this mail a box containing nineteen negatives which have been lent by Mr. R. Fyffe, Acting (hief Forestry Officer, and which may be found useful to the Visual Instruction Committee. Mr. Fyffe has requested that they may be returned when finished with.

3. I have caused officers who are shortly proceeding on leave, and who may have photographs in their possession, to be informed that the loan of these would be appreciated by the Visual Instruction Committee, with whom they should com- municate on arrival.

I have, &c.,

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE GOVERNOR. (Miscellaneous.)

Downing Street, 5th February, 1915.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 810, of the 5th of September, 1914.† and to convey to you the thanks of the Visual Instruc- tion Committee for the photographs obtained on their behalf.

2. The Committee wish, too, to express their indebtedness to Mr. McGregor Ross, from whose valuable series of slides, by the courtesy of Mr. G. A. Ross, they have been able to make a useful selection.

3. The present difficulties in the way of making a representative collection of views of the Protectorate are fully appreciated, but Mr. Stordy's photographs will no doubt form a valuable addition to the material available.
