India Office, Whitehall, London, S.W., 7th May, 1914. WITH reference to Mr. Dumbell's letter, dated 9th February, 1914,* I am directed to request that you will be so good as to cause this Office to be furnished with two copies of the book of lectures on Canada and Newfoundland, together with four complete sets of the lantern slides, issued by the Visual Instruction Committee. They are required, it may be explained, for transmission to the Government of Bengal, from whom it is proposed that the cost should be recovered.

Newton and Co., who prepare the slides for the Visual Instruction Committee, to furnish you with two copies of the book of lectures on Canada and Newfoundland, together with four complete sets of the lantern slides which illustrate those lectures.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Harcourt to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th of April,* asking for detailed information as to the publications and slides prepared by the Visual Instruction Committee of this Office.

2. I am to suggest, for the consideration of the Marquess of Crewe, that copies of the accompanying memorandum,t in which full particulars regarding the publi- cations in question will be found, should be furnished to the Governments of those Native States from which inquiries have been received.

3. With reference to a point raised in the enclosure to your letter, which is not dealt with in the memorandum, I am to explain that the slides are all of the standard English size, namely, three and a quarter inches square.

4. Mr. Harcourt concurs in the proposal to authorize Political Officers of the Government of India to communicate direct with the Visual Instruction Committee.
