It is hoped that a certain amount of information with regard to Chinese_ports may be obtained through the good offices of the medical authorities in Hong Kong. M. Emile Licent, a Belgian missionary and a competent entomologist, who has just - left for China, has kindly promised to collect mosquitoes for us there, and to interest some of his colleagues in the matter. We have supplied him with such collecting apparatus as he required, and he has further offered to send us any agricultural pests he may meet with in the course of his scientific work.

Reference has already been made to the fact that our Bureau now possesses a fairly complete set of the legislative enactments that have been passed in the various portions of the British Empire for the control of plant pests and diseases. Pro- fessor H. Maxwell Lefroy has very kindly undertaken to collate this information, and has already done a considerable amount of work in that direction. The general scheme adopted is to give a brief summary in non-technical language of the various regulations in force in each individual Colony. From these all the essential points will be extracted and arranged in the form of a skeleton Act, which should serve as a useful model for future legislation on the part of those Colonies which have not yet dealt comprehensively with the subject. It is suggested that this summary should be issued by the Bureau as a separate publication,

An account is submitted of the expenditure and receipts for the quarter under review (Appendix A), together with a statement showing the general financial position (Appendix B). From the latter it will be seen that, after making allow- ances for outstanding and future liabilities, there will probably be a surplus of £1,100 in the Bureau Fund at the end of March.

Mr. J. J. Simpson has accepted the terms for his re-engagement for four years at a salary of £525-£25-£600. His leave expired on the 18th December, but in view of the fact that a great deal of his time at home has been taken up with the prepara- tion of his reports on his journeys through Sierra Leone and the Gold Coast, the authorities at the Colonial Office sanctioned a two months' extension of leave. He will, therefore, sail for West Africa on the 18th February. In accordance with a previous resolution of this Committee, he will now devote his time entirely to the study of tsetse-flies, with the special object of devising practical means for their diminution. He suggests that the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast offer the most favourable field for such investigations.

No cable has yet been received from Mr. S. A. Neave in reply to the Colonial Office despatch offering him the post of Assistant Director of the Bureau.

The engagement of Mr. Ealand for the compilation of the index of insect pests, which has already been sanctioned by the Committee, has not yet been arranged. The reason for its postponement is that Mr. Ealand has been temporarily engaged by the British Museum to rearrange their collection of insect. pests. His work for the Museum, which will be of practical value for our entomological assistants, is expected to terminate about the middle of March, when he will take up his duties with the Bureau.
