(b) Number of children examined for enlarged spleen

Singapore

8,879 children were examined for enlarged spleen at the Boys'

Schools and Reformatory. Percentage affected, 1.49.

Penang :-

2,173 children were examined for enlarged spleen at the Ver-

nacular Schools. Percentage affected, 7.92.

Malacca and Labuan :---

No work of this nature was undertaken during the year.

(0) Number of persons examined for filarial diseases.-Fifteen persons

were treated for filarial diseases during the year.

(d) and (e) Surface drainage and reclamation of marshes :---

(1) The anti-malarial works at Telok Blanga were completed during

the year.

The effect has been apparent in the reduction to almost children zero of the high spleen rates that previously existed among attending the schools in that district.

(2) Swamp at the back of Tan Tock Seng's Hospital was filled in and

drained. Cost $500.

(3) Valley behind Colonial Secretary's bungalow drained by means of

subsoil drains, $378.

(4) Three gangs of coolies, each consisting of one mandore and 15 coolies, were employed during the year in petty anti-malarial works. Penang

A sum of $185,521 was spent during the year in Penang on drainage and reclamation works. An average of 95 men per month were employed on petty anti-malarial works. Some of the works carried out by the Publiu Works Department were:—

only built on sites approved by the Health Officer and on plana approved by the Government. The neighbourhood of such lines is kept clear and free from mosquito breeding-places.

(i) No remarks. About 11,000 coolies were repatriated since the outbreak

of the war.

(7) No exceptional increases or decreases in the diseases treated under these

heads have been noticed of late.

(*) The following steps are in progress or completed for the general reduc-

tion of death rate, and must in time show hopeful results

(1) Provision of back lanes and open spaces in rear of dwellings.

Initiation of sewage scheme.

Rapid removal and destruction of town refuse.

Plentiful supply of pure water.

Improvement of drainage.

Licensing of hawkers and control of eating shops.

Closing of polluted wells.

Extension of markets.

Employment of trained midwives and nurses for the poor.
