(No. 14.) SIR,

No. 12.

FALKLAND ISLANDS.

THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE. (Received 10th March, 1915.)

Government House, Stanley, 21st January, 1915. I HAVE the honour to transmit herewith a copy of the report of the Acting Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr. E. B. Binnie, on the whaling operations conducted at South Georgia during the period from the 31st March to the 30th September, 1914.

I have, &c,

Enclosure in No. 12.

W. L. ALLARDYCE,

Governor

ACTING MAGISTRATE, South GEORGIA, to COLONIAL SECRETARY,

23rd October, 1914.

SIR,

I HAVE the honour to submit herewith, for the information of His Excellency the Governor, my report on the whaling at South Georgia during the period from 31st March to the 30th September, known as the

"winter season.

2. Compared with the same period last year there is a total decrease of 14 whales, as follows:-

Decrease: 1 right, 134 fin, 71 humpbacks. Increase: 4 sperm, 184 blue, 4 sei.

The average production of oil is equally as good, and that of guano better, as will be seen from the schedules attached hereto; the scarceness of the humpback whale con- tinued through the season, but as quite a number have already been taken this- present season it is anticipated they will again visit the Dependency.

The increase in the number of blue and sperm whales is looked upon by the whaling people as a good omen for the coming season.

3.

The Tonsberg, South Georgia, Argentina de Pesca, and Sandefjord Whaling Companies continued operations during the winter months, although at this period not much whale hunting is done: It is generally a time for prepara- tion for the summer reason, the whale catchers are docked and all whaling gear is overhauled; the continual stormy nature of the weather during the winter does not permit of whale hunting to any great extent.

I have, &c.,

E. B. BINNIE, Acting Stipendiary Magistrate.

It will be noticed how a majority of fin whales reduces the average.

* An arrangement is made between this vessel and the Compania Argentina de Pesca, to utilize the flenched whale carcasses when finished with on the shore station; the above quantity of oil and baleen, etc., was produced from about 150 of these carcasses, averaging about 6.3 barrels of oil and 18 bags guano from each
