Males. In No. 290 (32-25 ft.), a "small young whale with small penis," the latter organ was 5 in. in diameter. In No. 17 (42 ft.) Major Barrett-Hamilton's note reads " penis reflexed, after removal of blubber it was 6 ft. long (about 5 ft. before); grooved posteriorly, and tapering to a very fine point-very different from

In a separate note on No. 7, a young male of 38 ft., a sketch of the external immedi- genitals is given. The penis is placed apparently far in front of the anus; ately in front of the anus are the closed mammary slits, each with a small mamma at bottom. These slits are separated by a median crease apparently.
Females.-No. 295 (27-5 ft., 16th January) :-" Milk, nil; mammæ and clitoris absolutely retracted. Virgin (almost certainly)." In a separate note, headed "Genitals of Virgin," a sketch of the The navel was an parts with their dimensions is given. elliptical fissure 18 in. long and 2 in. wide; parallel with its right side and externally there was a secondary slit 71⁄2 in. long; 11 in. behind the navel a diamond-shaped groove com- menced this was 24 in. long and 24 in. wide; in the middle line of its floor the genital slit appeared as a simple fissure. Opposite the fore-part of the genital slit a tightly closed mammary slit, 9 in. in length, was placed on each side. A transverse crease in the skin was situated 9 in. behind the genital groove, and a little behind this crease was the anus, which measured 3 in, in width. Behind the anus was a pos- terior transverse crease in the skin; the distance between the anterior crease and the posterior margin of the anus was 10 in., and a similar distance separated the latter point from the posterior crease.
