From this table it would appear that each of the three races of humpback occurring at South Georgia is characterized, apart from its colour, by certain more or less well marked differences of proportion. Thus the white-bellied form is
apparently most clearly distinguished from its associates by the relatively short distance between the tip of the snout and the axilla (dimension 8); in this respect it agrees with the humpbacks of the North Atlantic, but in others, as for example the quite exceptional length of the mandible (dimension 10-taken in one specimen only), it stands either alone or else shows a closer affinity with its two immediate neighbours. In the marble-bellied race the mandible projects relatively little, or sometimes not at all, in advance of the snout; the distance between the tip of the snout and the centre of the eye is short, as in the white-bellied form; that between the tip of the snout and the axilla is relatively great but shows a wider range of variation than in either the white or black-bellied forms; several of the post- umbilical measurements show a tendency to lengthen, and the heads of the females appear to be rather short. In the black-bellied form the distance between the tip of the snout and the centre of the eye is relatively long, but it shows a wide range of variation in the males and in the immature; the distance between the tip of the snout and the axilla is relatively great and in adults very constant in amount. A comparison of the figures in the table will suggest the presence of other differ- ences, but before they, or, indeed, those to which attention has just been called, can be determined with any certainty further material will have to be examined.
In Major Barrett-Hamilton's Journal (16th December, 1913) is the following entry: "There are said to be two kinds of humpbacks here, a small kind some- times comes, which, though small, is fully adult; whales of 35-45 feet long are considered large here."
VERTEBRÆ AND RIBS.
Males.-No. 62 (45′):-"Vertebral epiphyses fusing but evident.

able."
133 (46') :-
-"Vertebræ fused, showing lines only at epiphyses." 53 (495'):-"Vertebra with epiphyses fusing-adult male."
a separate note a sketch of the vertebræ " is given.

not thickened yet. Head of harpoon penetrated to under blubber of opposite side."
28 (346):-
:-"Ribs 14."
54 (43-75'):
251 (45′):-
-"Vertebral epiphyses distinct and not fused."
Vertebral epiphyses fusing, but visible on lumbars; thoracics not fused and thin." See below under 260. 59 (455'):-
:—“ Vertebræ not fused."
136 (46) Vertebral epiphyses distinct."
151 (47) or 153 (48′):-"Thoracic vertebral epiphyses of either Nos.
151 or 158 quite distinct."
260 (48'):-"Vertebral epiphyses quite free on lumbars."
Nos.
251 and 260 were examined on 12th January: in a foot- note referring to the cited descriptions of the vertebræ Major Barrett-Hamilton says:-"These two notes, copied as made at the time, look as if they ought to be transferred, but I think they are correct. There were no other hump- backs that day."
COLOUR.
The following are the notes made by Major Barrett-Hamilton upon the colour
of the humpbacks landed at Leith Harbour; the length of each whale is given in brackets for purposes of comparison:-
Males. No. 5 (36-7′):-Black, with some white spots, and the underside of the
pectorals white.
7 (38) Black above; irregularly marked with white below.
Pectorals black above; irregularly white below.
17 (42'):-Dusky, mottled with white below.
27 (42):
'Black, except white underside flippers and chest mottled and splashed with white."
