The Local Government Board on 16th July, 1913, then put into force Section 10 of the Local Government Board Ordinance, No. 13 of 1907, and took over the sanitary control of a limited number of villages; these villages then came under the direct control of the Government Health Officers. Since that date a systematic campaign of sanitation has been carried out and a large number of offenders prosecuted. So far the improvement in the sanitary condition of the villages under supervision has greatly improved, and it is proposed, once the sanitary condition of a village is satisfactory, to hand back the control to the local authority to maintain the standard of efficiency attained; systematic visits of inspection being paid by the Government Sanitary Inspector and Health Officers, who report on the sanitary condition of the village to the Local Government Board.
In order to interest overseers and others in charge of villages and country dis- tricts, courses of lectures on sanitation are given by the Government Health Officers, and examinations held, the successful candidates being granted certificates. The first of these examinations for Sanitary Inspectors was held in May, 1913, when 8 candidates were successful out of 17 entries.
It will be seen by the foregoing abstract of work done in the Colony that a serious effort is being made by the Honourable Surgeon-General to grapple with the question of ankylostomiasis, aided by the energetic efforts by the Government Medical Officers, and an attempt made to bring about an improvement in the general sanitary con- dition of the villages and estates by the Government Health Officers.
