4. There are two small points on which I take this opportunity of commenting. The scale of salary of the Office Superintendent referred to in the twelfth paragraph of your despatch has been fixed at £300-£10-£350, and that of the 3rd grade Sur- veyors referred to in the note at the end of the fourteenth paragraph has been fixed at £250-£10-£300. It would hardly be practicable to offer an initial salary of only £200 a year for an ex-soldier or other surveyor not in the Army.
