6 The Governor

Sierra September 9 Leone, (Rec. Sept. 22.)

129.

Recommends that & survey of the Peninsula of Sierra Leone be com- menced in 1914 on the lines of the Straits Settlements Revenue Survey, to be followed by a survey of the Protectorate; and suggests that the necessary staff be obtained from the Southern Nigeria Survey.

Forwards report on the work of the Topographical Survey of the Western Province, Uganda.

Points out, with reference to No. 2, that an accurate survey of the Peninsula on the 1-inch scale was made by the Colonial Survey Section in 1904: suggests that this map should be enlarged to the 2-inch scale; but observes that if larger scales are re- quired the establishment of a regular survey department will be necessary; and gives details of the formation and cost of such a department.

Agrees that a survey is desirable, but it should be on a wider and more systematic basis than he contemplates; encloses a copy of No. 4 and makes suggestions and observations as to a complete survey which would place Sierra Leone on an equality with other tropical African Colonies and Protectorates.

Concurs in the suggestions in No. 5, but observes that for the map of the Peninsula a scale of 6 inches is re- quired and a fresh survey will be necessary requests that the staff may be selected and sent out at the begin- ning of November.
