himself a very useful and reliable worker, I feel justified in submitting the recom- mendation that his salary should be raised to £150 from the beginning of the next financial year.
An estimate has been prepared to show the financial position with From this it appears that after providing regard to the Carnegie Scholarship Fund. for Messrs. Rutherford and Strickland during 1912, there should still be a sum of £500 to be expended, and the selection of another scholar or scholars will have to be considered, as Mr. G. H. Grosvenor has now returned to England, having finished his period of six months. Messrs. Rutherford and Strickland have terminated their university courses, and will spend this year in visiting the principal experiment stations in the United States.
A statement of the expenditure and receipts in connection with the Committee's Bulletin has also been circulated. In this no allowance has been made for the cost of preparing and printing the index, which is not yet known. Assuming it to be the same as that for Volume I., the net debit balance would be £210, as compared with a loss of £340 on Volume I., which also contained 54 pages less. The number of subscribers has temporarily diminished by 16, for although Messrs. Dulau and Company have secured 14 new subscribers, 30 of the original ones failed to renew. The total subscription copies sold amounted to 283, while the sale of separate copies has improved, yielding a net return of £24.
Dr. J. J. Simpson, who carried on the work of the office during my absence in the West Indies, sailed for West Africa on the 21st of this month. He expected to spend about five months in Sierra Leone, and proceeds from there to the Gold Coast. Mr. Neave, who has continued to send large collections from Uganda, has now returned to the East Africa Protectorate, and will probably start for England towards the end of March.

REPORT of the Chairman of the Selection Sub-Committee.
In accordance with a reference of the Committee at the General Meeting of the 26th of October, the Sub-Committee met on the 30th of November to select a suitable candidate for temporary appointment to the Federated Malay States for the purpose of studying in the field the life history, habits, and habitat of the ticks and other insects collected by the local medical and veterinary officers.
Three candidates were considered: Mr. A. E. Cameron, Mr. J. J. Simpson, and Mr. C. Strickland, but Mr. Simpson's name was withdrawn. The Sub-Committee decided to select Mr. Strickland, who not only possesses a sound knowledge of ento- mology, at which he has been working at the Quick Laboratory, Cambridge, but also holds the degree of Bachelor of Surgery.
The Sub-Committee were of opinion: (1) that the appointment should be offered at once without waiting for the formal approval of the Committee at the next General Meeting; (2) that no leave should be granted to the candidate selected in respect of his year of service; (3) that the secretary should consult Dr. Fraser of the Institute for Medical Research, Federated Malay States, as to outfit for Mr. Strickland; (4) that if the Federated Malay States Government should at the end of one year wish the appointment to be prolonged the Committee should not undertake to share the cost, but that this point need not be raised with the local Government at present.

Mr. Marshall observed that it would shortly be necessary to select another 'Carnegie scholar to succeed Mr. G. H. Grosvenor. The Sub-Committee agreed that the next man selected should be one who would be in a position to teach ento- mology to other students, not a young man only just beginning to study the subject. Mr. Marshall thought that possibly he might be able to find a candidate during his visit to the West Indies, who could be sent for a time to Hawaii. The Sub-Com- mittee agreed that there was nothing in the terms of Mr. Carnegie's donation which would conflict with such an arrangement. Mr. Cameron was also mentioned as a likely candidate for one of these scholarships. It was decided that Mr. Marshall should take such steps as he thought fit to find suitable men, whose claims would be submitted to the Sub-Committee for consideration.

REPORT of the Scientific Secretary upon his visit to the West Indian Agricultural Conference in Trinidad.
In December last an invitation was received, through the Colonial Office, from the Imperial Commissioner of Agriculture for the West Indies, asking that a repre- sentative should be sent by this Committee to the West Indian Agricultural Con-
