No. 49.
BRITISH GUIANA.
THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE ACTING GOVERNOR. (No. 170.)
Downing Street, 3 July, 1909.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 144, of the 24th May,* on the subject of the measures taken for the prevention of ankylosto- miasis in British Guiana.
Your despatch shows that enlightened and progressive action has been taken in British Guiana for the suppression of this disease, and I appreciate the excellence of the work that is being done in the Colony. I hope that British Guiana will reap the benefit in the improved condition of the labouring classes.
I am content to leave it to your discretion whether to take any steps with regard to the appointment of an Inspector-General, if and when such an appoint- ment is found possible in other Colonies.

THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE,
(Received 9 August, 1909.)
[Acknowledged 23 October, 1909. No. 107.]
WITH reference to previous correspondence on the subject, I have the honour
Government House, Barbados, 26th July, 1909. to transmit six copies of a Report† of anchylostomiasis, as it occurs in Barbados, by Dr. C. J. Manning, the Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum.
2. Dr. Manning has coloured red on the map of Barbados which is attached to his report the district where anchylostomiasis is chiefly prevalent. The parochial medical officers of the other districts, whom I have consulted, state that the disease is rarely met with in their practice.
3. I have submitted Dr. Manning's report to the Executive Committee with reference to the steps to be taken by legislation, or otherwise, for preventing the spread of this disease, and I will inform your Lordship of the measures which, on their recommendation, I propose to take.
4. I regret that on account of the delay in printing I have been unable to send you copies of this report at an earlier date.
