Resident Commissioner's Office, Mafeking, 14th July, 1909. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellency's despatch. No. 17/62, of the 7th instant, enclosing a copy of a despatch from the Secretary of State relative to the use of mechanical transport on roads.

2. No system of mechanical transport has actually been introduced in the Bechuanaland Protectorate, nor do I think that, owing to the conditions of the country, any system is likely to be introduced in the near future, and I am unable, therefore, to give the information referred to in the 3rd paragraph of Lord Crewe's despatch.

Administrator's Office, Livingstone, North-Western Rhodesia, In the absence of the Administrator, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of His Excellency the High Commissioner's despatch, No. 17/62, of the

27th July 1909. 7th instant, relative to the use of mechanical transport on roads, and, in reply, to inform you that there are no records, at present, of the results of any experiments with mechanical transport on roads in North-Western Rhodesia.

I understand that experiments are now about to be made, and I will endeavour to obtain definite information under the heads required.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 17/62, of July 7th, transmitting copy of a further despatch from the Secretary of State relative to the use of mechanical transport on roads. I beg to suggest that the following answers might be made to Lord Crewe's despatch.

2. No system of mechanical transport has been introduced in this territory: should, however, any system be hereafter established I shall forward information concerning it.

3. In the unlikely event of any proposal for the establishment of such a service in this territory being under consideration in the future, I shall gladly avail myself of the advice of the Mechanical Transport Committee.

IN acknowledging the receipt of your Excellency's despatch of the 7th July

Administrator's Office, Salisbury, 10th September, 1909. last, transmitting a copy of a further despatch from the Secretary of State relative to the use of mechanical transport on roads, I have the honour to express regret that, though enquiries have been made from private persons who used from time to time to have mechanical transport during the visitations of cattle disease, I have been unable to obtain any definite information of the nature asked for in the enclosure to the Secretary of State's despatch.

I should mention that mechanical transport has never been in use by this Administration.
