Transmits copies of reports on two trial trips recently made by the steam tractor, and in view of their adverse nature deprecates any considerable expenditure on the temporary repair of the Berbera-Sheikh road without expert opinion; recommends that an expert on mechanical transport should be sent out to report on the feasibility of motor transport in Somaliland.

States that the only system of mechanical transport in the Gold Coast is that of motor lorries used by mercantile firms, that the owners decline to give the information desired, but that he will make a further attempt to get it.

Transmits a copy of a memorandum by

the Director of Public Works.

Reports that beyond four steam ploughs, belonging to estates, which can also be use for traction purposes, the only system of mechanical transport em- ployed is that in connection with the Gunthorpe's sugar factory; explains circumstances in which the local ✦ manager of that factory refuses to give information and suggests that it might be obtained from their London house.

States that no system of mechanical transport has been introduced into the island, but that in recent years a few metor lorries, particulars regard- ing which are given, have been imported by merchants in Port of Spain.

Transmits copy of a table showing such details of the running and upkeep of motor transport vehicles as can be gathered from local experience.
