The effect of the treatment generally on the coolies of the free purgation, thymol, and tonics, with exercise and sea bathing, was most marked, and in some instances almost magical. Although only at the quarantine station for seven- teen days, they filled out, and their skins became glossy and healthy; many lost their anæmia and listlessness, which were entirely due to ankylostoma infection.

In no instance was the least objection raised to the taking of the drug. Thymol was not administered to 53 of the coolies who arrived in s.s. ing reasons: pregnancy, young children, and mothers with suckling infants.

brought a total of 246 immigrants. Of these 177 were males and 69 females. Of the 246 coolies, 148, or 60 per cent., were found to be infected with ankylostoma.

Of 177 males, 106, or 59-80 per cent., were infected, of the 69 females, 42, or 60-80 per cent., were infected.

Twenty-nine coolies were not dosed with thymol on account of pregnancy, extreme youth, and mothers with suckling children.

Each woman was asked by the interpreter whether e One woman, on saying no, received a first dose of thymol, and aborted a three months' not she was pregnant. fœtus on the following morning. This is the solitary case in which any untoward symptoms have followed the administration of thymol.

The same method of administration was followed as in the first batch of coolies brought by the s.s. Indus."
