MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE SUB-COMMITTEE APPOINTED BY THE TROPICAL DISEASES RESEARCH FUND ADVISORY COM- MITTEE TO CONSIDER THE QUESTION OF FILLING THE VACANT APPOINTMENT OF ASSISTANT IN THE MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT LAGOS; HELD AT THE COLONIAL OFFICE ON MONDAY, 29TH MAY, 1911.
PRESENT:
Mr. H. J. READ (in the Chair)
Sir PATRICK MANSON.
Sir DAVID BRUCE,
'Mr. STRACHEY.
Mr. BAYNES (Acting Secretary).
After careful consideration of the records of the eight officers whose names were brought before them, the sub-committee decided to recommend that the appoint- ment of Assistant in the Medical Research Institute at Lagos should be offered to Mr. A. Hutton, M.B., Ch.B. (Aberdeen), a medical officer serving in Southern Nigeria.
The sub-committee concurred in the suggestion placed before them that the officer selected should be appointed for a period of three years, then reverting to the ordinary duties of an officer of the West African Medical Staff, if this is desired either by himself or by the Government. They recommended that he should be debarred from private practice.
Mr. Strachey informed the sub-committee that the Governor of Southern Nigeria had recommended the addition of a second assistant to the establishment of the Institute, with effect from the 1st of January, 1912. The sub-committee were favourably disposed towards this recommendation, and suggested that the other West African Governments should be approached on the subject.
Sir Patrick Manson suggested that European subordinates might usefully be employed at the Institute, and stated that some of the assistants at the London School of Tropical Medicine would be suitable for such employment. Sir David Bruce mentioned the Royal Army Medical Corps as a possible alternative source of supply. Sir Patrick Manson undertook to make further enquiries on the subject.
