This district is a focus of malaria, and it always will be so as long as there is an utter neglect of the usual precautions now taken in tropical countries to destroy the breeding-places of disease-bearing mosquitoes. I have alluded to this matter in former reports, and I regret that proper steps have not been accomplished to prevent the spread of malaria in the chief town of the island.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE to THE HIGH COMMISSIONER.
(Miscellaneous.)
[Answered by No. 77.]
Downing Street, 16 December, 1910.
SIR,
WITH reference to my predecessor's despatch" Miscellaneous," of the 27th of August, I have the honour to inform you that Dr. G. A. Williamson's request for a grant of £50 to assist him in carrying on an investigation into the disease called "
ponos," was brought before the Advisory Committee of the Tropical Diseases Research Fund at their meeting on the 2nd of December.
2. The Advisory Committee were, however, of opinion that, while the investi- gation of the disease might be of value to Cyprus, it was not of sufficient importance to the Colonies generally to justify any expenditure from the limited funds at their disposal.
3. In these circumstances I regret that it is not possible to approve of any grant being made for the purpose.
4. I have to request that Dr. Williamson, who has recently returned to duty, may be informed accordingly.
I have, &c.,
L. HARCOURT.
