No. 36.

PELLAGRA INVESTIGATION COMMITTEE to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received 25 May, 1910.) [Answered by No. 41.]

Pellagra Investigation Committee,

140, Harley Street, W., May 21st, 1910.

A meeting of the Pellagra Investigation Committee was held on May 11th,

1910, at, which the following were present:-

Sir Lauder Brunton, in the Chair.

Professor Sandwith.

Dr. F. W. Mott, F.R.S.

Professor W. J. Simpson, C M.G.

Dr. G. C. Low.

Dr. Clement Godson.

E. C. C. Baly.

O. Stapf.

Miss Lorrain Smith.

R. S. Fraser.

Thomas Maben.

J. Cantlie (Hon. Sec.).

The meeting was called to hear a statement from Captain Siler, U.S. Army, upon the work of the Pellagra Field Commission now engaged in the study of Pellagra under the leadership of Dr. L. Sambon. Captain Siler's report is to the effect that the Field Commission has done excellent work during the period the Commission has been in Italy; and the evidence before the Committee is of such a nature that the Committee feel justified in seeking financial assistance for the further prosecution of the investigation of Pellagra.

Dr. Sambon's reports show that a great deal of work has been done, and Captain Siler's personal evidence bears out the statements in these reports.

Several letters have been received from other countries asking that Dr. Sambon be asked to visit them; especially is this the case in regard to the Austrian Tyrol.

The Committee have succeeded in raising £250. Guarantees of £50 have been received from the London School of Tropical Medicine; £50 has been guaranteed by Mr. R. S. Fraser. £143 have been guaranteed by the members of the Committee, of which £15 15s. have already been paid.

The Committee are given to understand that the Colonial Office has offered £150 if £450 can be collected or guaranteed.
