No. 53.

SIR C. LUCAS to MESSRS. NEWTON AND COMPANY.

[Answered by No. 55.]

Downing Street, 29 October, 1910. It is understood that you are prepared to undertake, for the Visual Instruc- tion Committee of this Office, the sale of the book of lectures on India for use in this country, with accompanying slides, on terms similar to those set forth in my letter of the 10th of September, 1907,* and accepted in your letter of the 18th of September, 1907,† which apply to the sale of the lectures on the United Kingdom.

2. I have to enquire, therefore, whether you are prepared to agree to the following terms :-

(a) Copies of the book of lectures to be supplied to you for sale, and to be sold by you at 1s. each net. The sales, less 10 per cent., to be accounted for by you to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, Whitehall Gardens, S.W., on behalf of the Committee.

(b) The necessary slides accompanying the lectures to be manufactured by you at your own cost, or to be purchased by you from Messrs. Sanger Shepherd and the Diagram Company, and to be sold by you either in complete sets of 480 slides at £50 the set, including boxes for storage, or by single complete lectures at 6 guineas a lecture, but not otherwise.

(c) A royalty of 12 per cent. on the slides to be paid by you to the Crown

Agents for the Colonies on behalf of the Committee.

(d) An annual account of the sales of the book and slides to be rendered to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, on behalf of the Committee, on the 1st of October of each year.

I shall be glad to know at your convenience whether you agree to the above. 3. I have to inform you that the Committee have made an agreement with Messrs. George Philip & Son to publish a cheap illustrated edition of the book.

It is understood that you will take steps, at the expense of the Committee, to copyright a sufficient number of the slides to safeguard the Committee, at an expense of about £2.
