REPORT on the Survey Department, for the information of the Colonial Survey Committee, for the year ending 31st March, 1909.
Organisation.
During the period under consideration, three European and two native sur- veyors have been employed on the contour survey of the Western Province in "filling in " features which had not been surveyed in the sheets with which they were dealing, and in carrying out the cadastral survey of the towns of Ibadan, Abeokuta and Aro, Oyo, and Epe.
2. One European and one native surveyor were employed in and about the town of Lagos in carrying out surveys for the Commissioner of Lands, survey of the Iju water supply scheme, and on a number of hydrographical surveys for the Marine Department, in Lagos Harbour and on Lagos, and Opobo bars.
3. One European surveyor was employed in the Central Province on the cada- stral survey of the towns of Sapele and Onitsha.
4. The Deputy Director has been employed since his return from leave (on 16 November, 1908) in superintending the projection of contours and in carrying on the office business of the Department during the absence of the Director of Surveys on tours of inspection in the hinterland.

7. The labours of this Department were chiefly devoted to the contouring, and filling in" of details of Sheets 731, 73D, and 73E. Sheet 735, showing contours of 25 feet intervals and giving a detailed description of the class of country, was completed and forwarded to the Colonial Office on the 12th of October last, accom- panied by an explanation of the methods employed in carrying out the work.
8. Sheet 73D should be completed in a fortnight hence, and the field-work of Sheet 73E is now practically finished. This sheet should be completed in about two months' time.

9. The methods of developing the contours were that of simultaneous baro- metric observations for determining the heights of the principal stations, which were selected at distances of about 15 miles apart; the "filling in was carried out by aneroids, which, when corrected for temperature and diurnal wave, were adjusted to the more accurate barometric elevations, which, being derived from simultaneous observations, established a vertical "close" in each "surround," the average probable error of which was not more than ±10 feet.
10. The class of forestry has been indicated by suitable distinguishing signs, which it is hoped will convey a clear and fairly accurate idea of the country thus described.
Cadastral.
11. In addition to the general map of the Western Province a number of towns in the Western and Central Provinces have been especially surveyed and contoured, viz., in the Western Province, (a) the town of Lagos, revised in 2 feet contours; (b) Abeokuta and Aro, surveyed and contoured in 25 feet intervals; (c) Ibadan, surveyed and contoured in 20 feet intervals; (d) Oyo, surveyed and con- toured in 20 feet intervals; (e) Epe, surveyed and contoured in 10 feet intervals. It is intended that these towns should be shown as insets on the degree sheets to which they belong. In the Central Province the towns of Onitsha and Sapele have both been surveyed and contoured, the former in 20 feet and the latter în 2 feet intervals.

12. A large number of surveys have been carried out at the request of the Commissioner of Lands. These include acquisitions under Government Notice, issue
of Crown grants, and definition of boundaries in cases of compensation and disputes.
Special.
13. A careful contour survey of the Iju Valley has also been completed, and
an accurate set of levels has been carried up from mean sea level (Lagos) for the purpose of facilitating hydraulic calculations.
The staff recommended to carry out this work was not approved. The vote therefore has s
far not been drawn upon.
