14. The currency of the Federated Malay States is a silver dollar of the value of two shillings and fourpence sterling and the salaries mentioned in these rules will be converted into dollars at that rate.

15. The appointments in the Survey Department of the Federated Malay States have been classified as follows, but no guarantee is given that the numbers and conditions of the appointments or the salaries attached to them will remain unaltered. Moreover, none of the posts included in these classes will be exclusively confined to officers originally appointed as Survey Cadets :-

Enclosure 2 in No. 11.

PROPOSED SYLLABUS for Qualifying Examination for Candidates for Appointment to Survey Department of Federated Malay States ("Survey Cadetships").

(1) Algebra.

Up to and including the binomial theorem, the progressions, theory of logar- ithms, problems involving permutations and combinations, equations of the first and second degree.

15

(2) Geometry.

The subject matter of Euclid, Books I.-IV. and XI., but not necessarily with strict adherence to Euclid's method and order. Geometrical drawing to scale.

(3) Plane Trigonometry.

Angular measurement and the comparison of different angular units. Definitions of and relations between trigonometrical ratios of angles, angles with given trigonometrical ratios. The trigonometrical ratios of the sum and difference of angles. Application of logarithmic tables to trigonometrical compu- tation. Solution of triangles.

(4) Spherical Trigonometry and Astronomy. Geometry of the sphere. Great and small circles on a sphere. Spherical triangles and their fundamental properties. Solution of spherical triangles. Spherical excess. The application of spherical trigonometry to astronomical pro- blems connected with the determination of latitude, time, and azimuth. (The candi- date will be expected to possess a general knowledge of the motion of the bodies of the solar system and to be able to use the Nautical Almanac.)

(5) Co-ordinate Geometry.

Rectangular co-ordinates. The geometry of the straight line and circle treated by co-ordinate methods. Elementary conic sections. (Omitting methods of abridged notation.)

(6) Differential Calculus.

Fundamental definitions. Differentiation of simple functions. Successive differentiation. Development of functions. Maxima and minima of functions of a single variable. Simple application to the geometry of curves.

(7) Elements of the Theory of Surveying.

Principles of the construction and use of instruments for the measurement of angles, viz., the theodolite and the sextant. General principles of surveying. Cor- rections to be applied to direct linear measurement. Methods of angular measure- ment and precautions to be observed for the elimination of errors. Methods of surveying by triangulation, by traverse, by measurement of subtended angles. General system of triangulation. Approximate corrections of observed angles. Reduction of angles to the centre of a station. Calculation of spherical excess. Computation of a triangulation. Computation of a traverse; check and adjustment of a closed traverse. Computation of subtense measurements. Solutions of the "three point problem" and of other trigonometrical problems of frequent occurrence in the field. Determination of vertical heights by the level and by angular measure- ment. Construction and use of the mercurial and of the aneroid barometer. ciples of the construction and use of instruments for detail survey, viz., the plane- table (simple form), the prismatic compass, the clinometer (various forms). Calcu- lations of the areas of rectilinear figures from the co-ordinates of their angular points or by other methods.

Prin-

Note to Section (7).-It is intended only to test the candidate's knowledge of the general principles of surveying and of the principles upon which survey instru- ments are constructed (such knowledge as may be derived from any good text-book), and to test his ability to apply his knowledge of mathematics to survey problems. It should be noted that the candidate is supposed to possess an ordinary acquaintance with the physical sciences, more especially those usually classified under the terms 'Heat" and "Optics."
