MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE COLONIAL VETERINARY COMMITTEE 23RD OF MARCH, 1910.
PRESENT:
Mr. H. J. READ,
Mr. S. STOCKMAN, and
Mr. J. R. W. ROBINSON (Secretary).
1. The Committee considered a despatcht from the Governor of Southern Nigeria suggesting that the services of Mr. G. Garden might be retained if his salary was paid for by contributions from the other West African Colonies, as well as by Southern Nigeria. The Committee recommended that consideration of the question of the further employment of a veterinary officer in Southern Nigeria should be deferred pending the receipt of Mr. Garden's final reports.
2. Supplementary reports by Mr. Garden on an alleged case of trypanosomia- sis in horses were discussed. The Committee thought that Mr. Garden's conclusions in these interesting reports should be accepted, and recommended that the Governor
of Southern Nigeria and Mr. Garden should be informed accordingly.
3. A memorandum by the Principal Medical Officer of Northern Nigeria on the treatment of trypanosomiasis in horses was considered. Mr. Stockman expressed in the opinion that the treatment was not of much practical value; in his view, which the Director of the Sleeping Sickness Bureau concurs, experiments of this nature with regard to animal trypanosomiasis made by medical officers have no value. It would be much more advantageous that a properly qualified veterinary officer should be appointed. The Committee decided to make a recommendation in this sense.
4. On consideration of recent correspondence§ with the Civil Service Commis- sioners, the Committee recommend that the question of the amount of the fee paid by candidates for the periodical examination should be raised, if it is found that candidates are debarred from entering the examination on account of the fee.
5. Replies from various Colonies to a circular inviting them to exchange infor- mation on veterinary matters with the Government of India were read.
