No. 2.
MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE COLONIAL VETERINARY COMMITTEE, 17 JUNE, 1909.
A meeting of this Committee was held on Thursday, the 17th of June, in the Conference Room.
Present: Mr. H. J. Read, Mr. A. W. Anstruther, Mr. Stockman, and Mr. Darnley, acting as Secretary.
1. Gov. 17528-09, Malta.* Question of restrictions on the importation of Servian cattle into Malta. The Committee entirely agreed in the views of the Governor as expressed in his despatch, No. 89, of the 18th of May.
2. Gov. 17404-09, E. Afr. Prot.*-Proposed increase of the salary of Captain Neave, Live Stock Inspector. The Committee saw no reason for granting the proposed increase, as Captain Neave had only recently been put on the pensionable establishment; his grade was that of Stock Inspector, and he did not possess professional veterinary qualifications. They did not understand the allusion to à refund of salary already paid to Captain Neave; no such refund was required.
3. Gov. 17332-09, Cape.* Proposed visit of Professor Nuttall to South Africa to test on stock, in cases of redwater and biliary fever, the remedy which has been discovered for canine piroplasmosis. The Committee was of opinion that the matter should await the complete report on the investigation which was being carried out in the laboratory of the Board of Agriculture, but that in the meantime the offer of the Cape Government to make certain trials of the treatment should not be accepted.

Enclosure in No. 3.
Administrator's Office, Livingstone,
North-Western Rhodesia, 13th May, 1909.
MY LORD,
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's telegram of 7th May with regard to errors in my despatch of 23rd April and in the map accompanying it. I am sorry that such careless errors should have escaped my notice and herewith I enclose a corrected map showing the game reserves in North- Western Rhodesia.
2. Areas Nos. 1, 2, and 3 are only partial reserves in which, by the agreement mentioned in Section 30 of High Commissioner's Proclamation No. 1 of 1905, the Company is to use its best endeavours to preserve game as follows:-In No. 1 all game including the animals mentioned in Schedule 4; in No. 2, Lechwe, Sitatunga, and Pookoo; and in No. 3, Lechwe and Pookoo. No ordinary or special licence is granted to shoot protected game in these areas, but practically they can hardly be considered as reserves more than in the sense that they are reserved to Lewanika and his people. The boundaries are very indefinite and can only be definitely described when the country is better mapped.
