SIR,
(No. 425.)
I have, &c.,
A. G. TODD, Captain,
Army Veterinary Corps.
No. 37.
EAST AFRICA PROTECTORATE.
THE EARL OF ELGIN to COMMISSIONER SADLER.
Downing Street, July 20, 1906. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, No. 313, of the 11th of June last, relative to the measures adopted to check the spread of African Coast Fever in the East Africa Protectorate, and to transmit to you, for your information, the accompanying copy of some observations on the subject which have been received from the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Board of Agriculture.
I have, &c.,
Enclosure in No. 37.
ELGIN.
I do not see what more can be done now except wait results. I know that the policing of such a country is most difficult, but after all a settler can protect his stock by keeping them on clean land inside a fence. If he is compelled to go on the roads with his draught oxen, he should arrange to pasture the latter apart from the remainder of his stock. It might be of interest to Mr. Stordy to know that recent investigations have shown that some other ticks than the Rh. Appendiculatus and Rh. Simus can carry the disease. These are Rh. Evertsi, Rh. Capensis and Rh. Niteus.
This, however, does not influence the general question of preventive measures, although it possibly means that the areas into which the disease might spread are wider than was formerly anticipated, owing to the larger variety of ticks now known to be capable of acting as carriers.
July 17, 1906.
