Trypanosomes are usually found in the blood and this may be the cause of the symptoms. Arsenic has been used as a curative agent, but not with uniform success.

REPORT on Horses in the North-Western District Ashanti, for the year ended December 31, 1905.
The number of horses in this district since I arrived here in June last has been The six, of which two are dead-one in this station and the other at Wanchi. death of the one here was due to abscesses of the kidneys, brought about probably by a parasite. The other one, as far as can be made out by reports from native sources, died from tsetse-fly disease. One of the horses at present is suffering from the symptoms of the last-named disease, but the other two horses are as fit as can be anywhere. The "doob" grass sown here for the purpose is in great demand, and
the horses seem to thrive well on it.

GOVERNOR SIR G. C. DENTON to THE EARL OF ELGIN.
(Received March 23, 1906.) ́ ́
[Copy of Enclosures 2 and 3 to Captain Todd, March 23, 1906. L.F.] (No. 34.)
MY LORD,
Government House, Bathurst, Gambia, March 7, 1906. In continuation of my despatch, No. 5, of the 4th January last,* I have the honour to transmit copies of reports by four of the Travelling Commissioners on the question of the prevalence of anthrax in their districts. The fifth Commis-
any
disease sioner, Mr. Sangster, has assured me, orally, that he has never heard of amongst cattle in the Protectorate which seemed to at all resemble anthrax.
2. The reports now forwarded have been referred to the Protectorate Medical Officer, who says that the disease described by Mr. Stanley may be anthrax, but this could only be settled, one way or the other, by the observation of another similar epidemic by an expert. Dr. Hopkinson adds that had it been anthrax he cannot but think that something would have been heard of it amongst the people themselves, especially the Foulahs, who may be said to live with their cattle.
I have, &c.,
