I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to inform you that he approves of your paying from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund the following sums:-

To the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine £500 on or after the 1st of January next, and £375 on or after the 1st of April next, and to the London School of Tropical Medicine the sum of £1,000 on or after the 1st of January next.

as having been paid to Dr. Eyre in England by the Crown Agents; but that the wording of the items is incorrect, and should be as follows:-

"Dr. Eyre's salary for May, June, and July

"Dr. Eyre's subsistence allowance for May, June, and July

138."

2. I beg to express my regret that the incorrect description of these items was not noticed when the accounts of the Mediterrancan Fever Commission for the September quarter were under examination.

Downing Street, January 12, 1907. WITH reference to the letter from this Department of the 24th October last,*

I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to transmit to you, to be laid before the Army Council,

the accompanying certified statement of Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, expenditure for the quarter ended 30th September last, which has been defrayed from Malta funds in connection with the Mediterranean Fever Commission.

2. The statement has been examined locally by the Auditor-General of Malta and found correct, with the exception of items 5 and 8, as to which further informa- tion has been asked for. In the event of its being necessary to disallow any over- payments, the difference will be adjusted in the accounts for the December quarter.

3. I am to request that instructions may be given for the payment of one- Army funds to the

third of the total expenditure shown, say, £292 3s. 9d. from Navy

Crown Agents for the Colonies for the credit of Malta funds.
