I HAVE the honour to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of your despatch, No. 101, of the 21st of May,* respecting the visit of Mr. A. Hugh Fisher, and to inform you that a note has been made of your desire to be supplied with prints of the photographs obtained by him.

MY DEAR MACKINDER,
Downing Street, 9 June, 1908. You will see from the enclosed copy of a despatch* from Cyprus that the High Commissioner wishes to have prints of the photographs taken by Fisher in the island. Will you kindly make the necessary arrangements, in due course, as in the case of the somewhat similar request from Somaliland.

SIR C. P. LUCAS to THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE ON VISUAL INSTRUCTION.
DEAR
Downing Street, 30 June, 1908.
I AM sorry to have to tell you that, owing to conflicting engagements, it has been found impossible to hold the proposed lecture for the exhibition of Mr. Fisher's slides during the summer, and, with the consent of the Princess of Wales, it has been postponed.
We hope, however, to be able to arrange one for some future date-possibly early in next year.
Yours, &c.,
C. P. LUCAS.

of the circular despatch of the 13th of April, 1905,* of which copies were enclosed in my letter of the 25th of August† of that year, and a further copy of which is enclosed for facility of reference.
Most of the money required for the necessary initial expenditure on the pre- paration of illustrated lectures on the Colonies for use in the schools of the United Kingdom has been secured at the instance of H.R.H. the Princess of Wales, through the assistance of Lady Dudley and a committee of ladies, who raised by private subscription a sum nearly amounting to £4,000. This sum was placed at the disposal of the Committee on Visual Instruction, sitting at this Office, to enable them to proceed with the scheme.
the 31st.
Mr. A. Hugh Fisher, a member of the Painter-Etcher Society, was selected by the Committee to visit India and the Colonies for the purpose of obtaining views suitable for lantern slides. He has recently returned from his first tour, which embraced India, Ceylon, and Burma, Somaliland, Aden, and Cyprus, and will sail in the "Empress of Britain" for Canada on the 24th of July, reaching Montreal on
It is intended that Mr. Fisher shall travel across Canada during the summer and the time of harvest, visit Hong Kong, Singapore, Borneo, and Weihaiwei, and then again recross Canada to secure pictures of the country in winter and in spring.
It would assist the artist very much in the selection of suitable fields for work if he had the advice and assistance of Canadian Education Officers, and the Com- mittee would be grateful if you could be so good as to provide him with introductions to such officers and to any others who would be interested in and further the work.
While in India Mr. Fisher was given free passes over all the railways, as well as Customs facilities whereby his valuable photographic apparatus, which requires very careful handling, was admitted without examination. Any similar privilege in Canada would be very greatly valued by the Committee, whose funds are not at present adequate to cover the whole of the work throughout the Empire which lies before them, and who are most anxious that the Dominion of Canada shall be illustrated both by view and letterpress in the most effective manner possible.

8 July, 1908. On behalf of the Committee on Visual Instruction, I have to ask, in confirma- tion of the verbal request which has already been made to you, that you will book a passage to Montreal for Mr. A. Hugh Fisher, by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company's steamer "Empress of Britain," leaving this country on the 24th of July.
The cost of the passage should be charged to the Princess of Wales's Fund, and the ticket should be sent to Mr. Fisher at 94, Cambridge Street, Eccleston Square, S.W.
A further letter will be addressed to you shortly on the subject of Mr. Fisher's allowances, and of the manner in which advances are to be made to him while on his tour.
