If £2,000 could be granted for topo. section valuable progress would be made, but do not press this strongly.
In any case formation of topo. section imperative for 1908-9.

COLONIAL OFFICE to ORDNANCE SURVEY OFFICE.
Downing Street, March 4, 1907.
I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 14th of February,* and to convey to you his thanks for the trouble which you have taken in regard to the instruction at Southampton of the selected candidates for the Uganda Survey Department.
I am, &c.,
R. L. ANTROBUS.

The map of the Colony and Ashanti is drafted on a scale of 1/50,000, and all officers' sketches, &c., are fitted to this draft map.
A very large amount of office work is created by using the 1/62,500 scale, and inaccuracies are introduced in enlargement.
I feel certain that, in recommending the scales given in the Secretary of State's despatch, the Colonial Survey Committee must have overlooked the fact that the map of the Colony has been in construction for several years, that the scale of the draft map cannot now be altered, and that therefore the scale of 1/50,000 should have been allotted to the Gold Coast in addition to those named. This gives us the power of using this scale, and, technically, it cannot possibly affect the Director of Military Operations.
3. I have already on several occasions asked officers to use the 1/50,000 scale, and the Chief Commissioner, Ashanti, has issued, I believe, instructions to that effect. The Officer Commanding, Gold Coast Regiment, certainly has, and unless the circulation of the new order is withheld, or temporarily cancelled if already circulated, most inconvenient confusion will ensue.
4. I have the honour to request that the matter may be laid before the Secretary of State, and that,.pending his decision, immediate steps should be taken to cancel or withhold the circulation of his despatch.
The Honourable
The Acting Colonial Secretary,
Victoriaborg,
I have, &c.,

WITH reference to Your Lordship's despatch, No. 510, of the 8th December last, on the subject of the scales on which sketches and maps should be plotted, I have the honour to transmit a copy of an "urgent" letter from the Director of Surveys, requesting that the scale of 1/50,000, hitherto in force, may be retained in this Colony.
Pending the receipt of further instructions, I have provisionally deferred giving effect to the instructions contained in Your Lordship's despatch under reply.
