WITH reference to your letter of the 2nd January last, I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to transmit to you, to be laid before Sir E. Grey, the accompanying copy of telegraphic correspondences with the Governor-General of Australia, regarding the possibility of the cession of Tahiti by the French Government.
I am to inquire whether Lord Northcote may be informed that, in the opinion of His Majesty's Government, there is no ground to apprehend such a
cession.
