SIR,
(Received June 7, 1907.)
[Answered by No. 154,]
25, Bampton Street, Tiverton, June 5, 1907.
In reply to your letter of 31st May,* enclosing a copy of a despatch to the Governor of Hong Kong on the subject of the lantern lectures, I have the honour to inform you that the remark made in the preface of the handbook as to the desirability of using the lectures each as the subject of several hours' lessons has not been lost sight of by me.
My annual report for 1907 contains a full report on the working of the scheme of "visual instruction;" and in it I took occasion to point out that the difficulty encountered in Hong Kong was the necessity of hurrying through the lectures, in order that as many schools as possible might have the use of them during the cool weather. The lectures have been so favourably received by teachers, that I think it will be possible to induce managers of aided schools to purchase additional sets of slides. In this way the difficulty might be overcome. With your approval, I will see them in this connection on my return to Hong Kong.
If it is found that my report fails to give information regarding any points on which it is needed, I shall gladly supplement it to the best of my ability.

I have, &c.,

Inspector of Schools,
